Every life stolen was an entire world. The point is not to pretend that all we need is shared mourning, or to equate the suffering on both sides. Reckoning and accountability are required.
Three Years Later, We Still Haven't Figured Out How to Mourn:
On October 7th, resisting the flattening of empathy.

Great panel on legacies of Cable Street at @bisa-bkk.bsky.social last night - was wonderful to speak alongside @liamliburd.bsky.social and Nadia Valman. In one of my favourite ever slipups, I was talking about the groups Stop the Hate and Our Fight but actually said 'Stop the Fight' and 'Our Hate'.
@annsplaining.bsky.social of Jewish Greens was great in this BBC Radio 5 discussion, starts at 1:05:45 www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Do come to this - it's going to be great
We’re looking forward to ‘The Battle of Cable Street ninety years on: the struggle against fascism and antisemitism, then and now’ tomorrow with with Nadia Valman, Liam Liburd (@liamliburd.bsky.social) and Joseph Finlay (@josephfinlay.bsky.social). Book here to join us: bit.ly/4xoQuJC
The most problematic word in Zionism is Racism is the ‘is’. Most people can see that since 1948 Zionism has necessarily involved racism towards Palestinians and still does. But that isn’t the sum total of what Zionism has meant. For Jews it was a nationalist movement, especially pre-48.
There will be many wild statements calling the Green Party antisemitic; these are a predictable consequence of a motion that focused on language and ideology rather than the material practices of occupation and apartheid. A motion committing the Green Party to BDS would have been far better.
Again, I think the ZiR motion is pretty silly, doesn't help Palestinians, and won't amount to much. But this statement from the Movement for Progressive Judaism (I belong to a synagogue affiliated to it) is completely ridiculous progressivejudaism.org.uk/statement-co...

Given that most of the Jews on the official Cable Street 90th anniversary march today were associated with the Jewish Bloc for Palestine and broadly support the ideas of the motion, whether or not they think it was smart politics / tactical, no it isn't actually
So it passed. As I said, not a disaster. It’s a piece of untactical performative politics but let’s not make it out to be the new Nuremberg laws. The proposers of the motion were very clear that it couldn’t lead to sanctions against members. No Zionists will be expelled from the party.
It will not be a disaster if the Zionism is Racism motion passes or if it falls. It’s just a conference motion. Everyone needs to calm down. It was UNGA policy between 1975 and 1991 and didn’t lead to the liberation of Palestine or the sky falling in.

Stinging attack on foreign secretary came during an address to an audience of 500 who he urged to remain in the UK to fight to maintain a vibrant Jewish life
In relation to the attempted plane hijacking half my timeline is salivating over Israeli heroism and the other half is calling it a false flag.
🟰On this day 16 years ago the Equality Act came into force in Britain. ⚖️ However part of this, the socio-economic duty, which would require public bodies to consider socio-economic inequality, was never brought into force. 1/5
Sanction all countries that practice capital punishment, including the US.
It’s fine to try to get people to join the party to suppprt a particular policy. It’s not fine to work with the AZM, which is closely tied to David Miller and Rahmeh Aladwan, both of whom are racist. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Now people are claiming that the attempted air-hijacking was a false flag. Don't get sucked into these conspiracies. And don't share anything from the Canary.
People realise that just because the police are no longer categorising the Golders Green stabbing as terrorism it’s still a real thing that happened right? It’s now being classified as a hate crime, presumably because they think the attacker acted alone. Don’t give me any of this false flag shit

Andy Burnham is definitely wrong on some key issues: refugees, far-right groups, the continued proscription of Palestine Action. But it does make a nice change to have a PM who is not wrong on absolutely every issue, and is actually decent on quite a few.
Not that it counts for much now but Rafah had been inhabited for over 3000 years and appears in the book of Maccabees. Now it's just gone.
Rafah, a city which had a pre-war population of 170,000 and once hosted the "humanitarian zone" for over a 1,000,000 Palestinian refugees, no longer exists in a meaningful way. Literally ground to dust.
It’s not credible for the government to claim to have reset policy on Israel / Palestine unless they overturn the proscription of Palestine Action and cancel all the prosecutions www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Full of admiration for @zackpolanski.bsky.social after hearing about the Jewish community hustings yesterday. We need more political leaders who stick to their principles even when they know it won't make them popular. I'm proud to be a Jewish member of the Green Party this morning

The only way you can identify yourself as anti-Zionist and say that Israel has committed genocide in a shul and not be thrown out, is if you are standing for election and get invited to a hustings there. So shekoyech to @zackpolanski.bsky.social for speaking for all of us excluded from these spaces.
I increasingly think that the Zionism is Racism motion is strategically wrong and will be counterproductive but this Yachad statement spectacularly misses the point and just goes on about self-determination as if every people has the right to its own ethnostate. yachad.org.uk/statement-on...
