@asyates2.bsky.social

Post-doc fellow (FNRS) at Université libre de Bruxelles 🇧🇪, using passive seismic methods towards monitoring volcanic and geothermal environments🌋. Previously 🇭🇲, 🇳🇿, 🇫🇷, originally from Jersey 🇯🇪.

One of my favourite times of the year, EGU! If would like to hear more about coupled observations of changes in seismic spectra and velocity changes at multiple volcanoes, don't hesitate to pass by Room 0.96/97 on Wednesday 6 May, at 17:40–17:50 😉.

Visited the Capelinhos volcano on Faial island, site of the 1957-58 eruption. The land visible to the right of the lighthouse (left side of photo) was entirely built during this eruptive episode, which began as submarine volcanism. Truly fascinating to see.

Weather kind so far, also joined by curious companions. Second day of servicing broadband seismometers with colleagues at Gutenberg University Mainz and IVAR research institute here in the Azores (with soil moisture sensors installed also).

I do miss that feeling of "wow, this is really well written" when reading student work. (as I review another masters thesis with lit review clearly written by chatgpt, this time with the wrong reference titles to back that up).

Little bit different from my usual work. Putting some nodes out at a site of a recent archaelogical dig in St Lawrence, Jersey. Aim is to apply HVSR towards detecting a layer boundary related to prior human compaction. Lets see!

As Hurricane Melissa makes landfall in Jamaica, we can see its approach over the past few days on seismometers. Strong winds generated by hurricanes create ocean waves and pressure fluctuations that cause stronger up and down movements in the water column, which seismometers record.

Having Stromboli as an 'office' view for the past few days has been quite something! A couple more days of fieldwork planned, then a cheeky trip to the volcano for a bit of tourism ;)

Definitely a bunch of fieldwork left unshared during the past year, but this can change ;) Currently undertaking fieldwork in Panarea, Italy, with scientists from Brussels, Ghent, and Namur, to map zones of hydrothermal alteration. Worse places to be in October 😎.

This was not a planned shot ^^; almost surprisingly, first time visiting a UK institution.

Department of Earth Sciences at Durham University, UK@durhamearthsci.bsky.social · last yr.

Visiting the department this week is Dr. Alexander Yates @asyates2.bsky.social from @ulbruxelles.bsky.social. Today, Alec started our VolcCoffee seminar series with a presentation on his research into seismic noises and how they can be used to improve our understanding of volcanic systems! 🌋🌐📈

On the same day that i graduated from my first degree eleven years ago, i defended my PhD 🙂. Thanks to FB for letting me know of that little coincidence. And thanks to this great team 👌👌 (sorry Co, there isnt one photo where at least one of us isnt looking the wrong way 😅). On to 🇧🇪 for a Post-doc.

Funny little coincidence. Said today I would make scones for the lab; would be the first time since my last ones were sent flying by the Kaikoura earthquake (having been left out on a tray). Just realised it was the 7-year anniversary today of the EQ ^^. Stars are aligned to remake these scones.

Haven't seen this posted on here yet, but saw this in a twitter post (map.is), a nice free tool that can be used to view recent IMO earthquake locations. Here's the activity in the last 6 hours (for example). Just bringing it here as I'm trying to avoid using twitter (X) if i can!
