Why the Venezuelan Earthquakes Happened, and What to Expect Next

NEW: Yesterday, a rare catastrophe struck Venezuela when a magnitude 7.2 and a magnitude 7.5 quake hit the same region *within less than a minute*. For the @nytimes.com, I asked scientists how this happened, why they were so devastating, and what might happen next. www.nytimes.com/2026/06/25/s...
⚒️ 🧪 A catastrophic earthquake just struck northern Venezuela. Large buildings have collapsed, and the USGS PAGER is forecasting thousands of fatalities. Our colleague in Caracas, Dr. Frank Audemard, has shared with us what the earthquake felt like and footage from the region. Here’s what we know.

wow — the preprint host, arxiv, is banning authors for a year if they submit papers with hallucinated citations 🤖
I find this unsettling: A new study in #Lancet shows that the number of faux citations in scientific articles is on the rise, and #AI is likely to blame. @aniloza.bsky.social reports. www.statnews.com/2026/05/07/l...

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

Not so marvelous news. ~95,000 scientists have left the federal government since the Trump regime took over.
