Folks, I am proud to report that 2026 was an outstanding year for our Senate district in the state Capitol. Eleven of my bills were signed into law by the governor, including three landmark laws that are the first of their kind in the nation.
Senator Jerry McNerney
@senmcnerney.bsky.social
Senator of CA's 5th District, which includes Alameda County's Tri-Valley & all of San Joaquin County. Former member of Congress for 16 yrs. The Science Senator.
What a year! Eleven of my bills were signed into law by the governor, including three landmark laws that are the first of their kind in the nation: ✅SB 813 Evaluating Artificial Intelligence Safety Risks (1st in the nation) ✅SB 947 No Robo Bosses Act of 2026 (1st in the nation)
More good news! @governor.ca.gov last evening signed my final bill of the year - SB 1406, closing the so-called “Montana Tax Loophole,” which will enable California to recover approximately $20 million a year in lost revenue from wealthy tax evaders.
A huge thanks to @senmcnerney.bsky.social & @governor.ca.gov for leading the way to pass #SB900, the Print Ads DISCLOSE Act, to fight dark money in politics! Now voters will be able to much more easily see the top funders on billboards and all other political print ads.
📌 AB 2222 was sponsored by Rebuild Local News and introduced by @asmchrisward.bsky.social, with Assemblymember @buffywicks.bsky.social as joint author and @senmcnerney.bsky.social, Assemblymembers @joshlowenthal.bsky.social, @asmtinamckinnor.bsky.social, and Sharon Quirk-Silva joining as coauthors.
Excellent!! @governor.ca.gov today signed my SB 947, the No Robo Bosses Act of 2026 — a groundbreaking new law that requires human oversight of artificial intelligence systems in the workplace to prevent abuses. It's the first such law in the nation! @californialabor.bsky.social

Yes! @governor.ca.gov signed my SB 1196, which will streamline the creation of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) - also known as backyard cottages - by accelerating utility service connections. Thanks to The Casita Coalition & @cayimby.bsky.social for supporting SB 1196!
Excellent! @governor.ca.gov has signed my SB 327, which protects ratepayers by strengthening oversight of investor-owned utilities (IOUs) and barring IOUs from using ratepayer funds to fight local efforts to create municipal utilities.
Great news! @governor.ca.gov has signed my SB 881, the Farmer to Food Bank Tax Credit. SB 881 enables farmers, growers, and food producers to continue to provide fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and more to food-insecure families and receive tax credits for donating surplus food to food banks.

Privileged to deliver closing remarks last evening at a United Nations-related event in New York City on establishing effective oversight of artificial intelligence to ensure AI is safe and beneficial.

Excellent! Gov. @gavinnewsom.bsky.social today signed my SB 1168, which is designed to protect Californians from skyrocketing utility rates caused by data centers.
Great news! @CAgovernor is fast-tracking my SB 813, which establishes the nation's first independent assessments of AI safety risks. I also plan to introduce legislation in Dec. to implement the gov’s recommendations on AI safety standards, mandatory safety assessments & more.
While Congress sits on its hands, California is leading the nation on AI safety. I'm issuing an executive order to accelerate third-party oversight of frontier labs and calling on world-leading experts to report back on proposals like "kill switches" for models.
I agree with Mr. Amodei, Altman and others that serious guardrails are past due for artificial intelligence. Ideally, safety standards or protocols would already be in place, but since no real constraints exist, targeted moratoria are urgently needed.
ICYMI: This week we learned that the most powerful AI systems pose very real threats to humanity. But California is taking action. @cagovernornewsom.bsky.social yesterday afternoon signed my SB 813, establishing the nation's first independent safety reviews of the risks posed by AI.
