Brain injured game designer who pays bills as an SLP. Avatar of Cheese Masculinity. Board games, sewing, LEGO, books. This Machine Helps People Use Their Voice. I'd like a hard boiled egg. https://sites.google.com/view/johndubois/home?authuser=0

Part of the problem with what happened with Charlie Kirk is that many firings were essentially “we care less about our employee than we care about Kirk stans shutting the fuck up and getting off the phone/e-mail” Except 1. Those employees sued 2. Kirk stans didn’t shut the fuck up

a year later, looking back, I think Charlie Kirk marks the high water mark of the right's cultural dominance for a little bit there they actually managed to force civil society as a whole to crack down on people saying mean shit about one of their own, and it turned out to be a massive overreach

So IDK if this counts but technically I turned a profit from it There was a time where, if you DMed at the right conventions, you could collect the swag given to DMs and flip it for cash It wasn’t a living or anything, but it was a way to make a few extra bucks from something I was enjoying anyway

Happy labor day (USA). What's one of the oddest paid job you've had? Mine was probably as a reader for a medical professor at Rutgers, whose eyes were failing. I read him many academic texts, as well as Samuel Butler's "The Way of All Flesh."

I’m reading these quoted El-Sayed posts, and I can’t recall a single thing that any elected official at the time said that was smarter and more compassionate. These are *good* posts, and we *should* be doing what he says in the posts instead of… what we did and are doing.

There's literally nothing wrong with either of these posts. Nothing at all wrong with them. This is such an insane and obvious attempt to attack him because he's Muslim.

Meanwhile, El-Sayed's past references to the deadly attacks have continued to surface, including two deleted social media posts verified by CBS News that have not been previously reported. In those posts, he calls for the American public to muster the same outrage for the COVID-19 death toll that they displayed after 9/11.
In one, from April 2020, El-Sayed compared the nearly 3,000 Americans killed on Sept. 11 to the mounting COVID-19 death toll and argued for a response commensurate with the nation's post-9/11 mobilization. In another, El-Sayed wrote that because more Americans had died from COVID than in the Sept. 11 attacks, he hoped
"that means we'll spend the next ten years fighting a war for public health & against poverty ... like we launched a global #WaronTerror after 9/11. We could save lives rather than take them."
"Abdul has always unequivocally condemned terrorism and the September 11 attacksẠỊa spokesperson for El-Sayed's campaign said in a statement to CBS News. "Mike Rogers' attempts to misrepresent Abdul's beliefs are bad-faith lies meant to mislead Michiganders."

“Abdul El-Sayed needs to comment on the thing Hasan Piker said” Look I’m not gonna defend Piker But if we’re gonna play this game (which, frankly, helps nobody but Piker) we’re also gonna need to have all the Israel ride-or-dies comment on the worst bullshit Netanyahu and Ben-Gvir say

There’s an op-ed in the fact that Minneapolis was allowed to treat Jake Lang like the shitstain he is, but Dearborn had to let him go to the city council meeting and spew hate Because if he’d gotten punched by Dearborn Spidey, we’d get weeks of Muslim hate in the press and a lost Senate seat

People have already mentioned how Peter became Hegemon in Ender’s Game, but I also want to point out that we never really learned *how* Big Brother took control in 1984. There’s a lot of spec fic that deals with outcomes without talking about methods, and social media fits in many of those spaces.

As an author of sci Fi isn't the most glaring non prediction social media? Jet packs and robots and ray guns but nothing on oligarchs turning is against each other on socials.

IDK why late diagnosis is showing up in my feed, but I'm just going to point out that I work in a disability-related field, I'm in my 40s, and I got diagnosed with ADD, autism and executive functioning disorder *this month* because I finally got enough overwork to throw me into long-term burnout.

There are stories I could tell, but they don't provide the reason, which is "guilt by association" - either assuming that because I associate with or vote for person X, I agree with and endorse everything they say or do, or that by thinking X, I must also think Y.

December 2, 2023 post from gabb @BaseballGabb: what's the dumbest reason someone on the internet got mad at you?

Heading Forward is the outcome of a lot of deep thought, reading, and listening about what games can be. And while I may find more commercial success with later designs, I find it hard to imagine making a game more personally impactful to me than this one.

Time for another thread! To celebrate a decade of Hollandspiele being in business, we presently have a game from each calendar year on sale. The 2022 game is one of the games I'm proudest to have published - Heading Forward by @johndubois.bsky.social .

Today I visited Sitdowners Memorial Park in Flint for purely self-indulgent reasons - to get a picture of myself at the monument commemorating the strikers with a copy of Striking Flint. But that wasn’t all I took away from the trip.

Game designer John du Bois holding a copy of his game Striking Flint while seated in front of a monument to the 1936-37 Flint Sit-Down Strike.

I’ve got pictures and a thread to follow, but I visited Sitdowners Memorial Park in Flint today to take some pictures, and I was struck (ha) by the central feature of the park being dedicated to women who were not members but contributed to organized labor in general.

Since the Tim Horton’s promotion has brought it up again, here’s my list of recommended alternatives to the Scarred Boy Wizard books: 1. The Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchett 2. The Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan 3. Earthsea by Ursula LeGuin 4. Animorphs by K A Applegate

I know that on here we like to talk about The Internet Was A Mistake But seriously y’all I have saved *so* much time and money just by using YouTube to figure out how to do shit for my car and home appliances myself instead of calling a professional

Even if Nessel was right here (she’s not - she’s both factually incorrect and tone policing), she’d still be wrong. This should be an internal discussion, not a media interview. Saying this shit openly just gives Rogers ammunition, and it’s not like Nessel can’t reach El-Sayed privately.

Can anyone actually quote one thing that Abdul El-Sayed has said that could be deemed antisemitic? www.mediaite.com/media/news/d...

In 2022, the US House District I live in featured a primary between two incumbents because of redistricting - Haley Stevens and Andy Levin. Despite Levin being Jewish and active in his synagogue, AIPAC backed Stevens in the primary because they felt she was more supportive of Israel.
