Wise words from @lordrickettsp.bsky.social on BBC R4 Today after Trump’s abandonment of Ukraine: UK gov’t has to start a conversation with the people about the threats from Russia & what it means for us. Europe can’t keep hoping that life will return to normal, as long as Trump & Putin are in power.

Brexit and Russia… “I think you would have to start with Boris Johnson. “The reason why there is still this confusion is there was no public attempt to establish with confidence what actually happened because successive British governments declined to look closely at what was going on.” (Times)

Russia's Brexit meddling: the evidence

Excerpts

SOCIAL MEDIA
In November 2017, The Times reported that Russian Twitter (now X) accounts had posted almost 45,000 messages about Brexit in 48 hours during the referendum campaign.
More than 150,000 accounts based in Russia that had previously posted about other topics, such as Ukraine, switched their attention to Brexit in the days before the vote, according to data scientists at Swansea University and the University of California, Berkeley.

Russian activity spiked on the day of the referendum and on June 24, when the result was announced. Many of the messages appeared to have come either from fully automated “bot” accounts or from “cyborg” profiles, which have some human involvement.

Most of the posts seen by researchers encouraged people to vote for Brexit, an outcome President Putin would probably have favoured, given that it destabilised the European Union.

PUTIN’S ‘LITTLE GREY MEN’
Russian political technologists operate as a middle tier between state strategy and information warfare, turning politics into managed theatre, fake opposition movements or statedirected social engineering.

One such individual, Yevgeny Minchenko, was “on the ground” in London during the Brexit referendum and shared a photo of a London polling station with his Russian followers on the day of the vote.

A passage in one of Minchenko’s own reports said that, while researching the referendum, he was provided with material from YouGov, the BBC, IpsosMori and Lord Ashcroft Polls.

Minchenko later used his findings to inform a master’s degree course in Moscow aimed at training “specialists in information warfare” — the next generation of election engineers.

THE RUSSIA REPORT
It was only after the hack and leak operation that the British government woke up to the threat Russia could pose to the democratic process, a report concluded in 2020.

Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto says it is a “complete mistake” for the US to restrict satellite and intelligence support used by Ukraine. He warned that weakening Ukraine would convince Putin he can win and prolong the war. “I think that is completely wrong.” #Ukraine

North Carolina A&T students marched back to campus after their polling place was closed. They voted anyway! It took students about 45 minutes to reach Union Square — now the closest early polling place. Some sections of sidewalk were missing or obstructed by branches, forcing people into the street.

Trump's line was that Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries set the price of oil. The chokepoint he set ablaze says otherwise. The risk premium has one author. Kyiv is the capital, or simply: The place in question is Kyiv. Months into his Iran war, the strait is still mined and still burning.

🔥 BREAKING A supertanker carrying more than 2 million barrels of crude hit a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz. Blast and fire followed. The vessel was nearly triple the size of the 750,000-barrel tanker that struck a mine there earlier.

OTD in 2016 Gorbachev stated quite categorically that he never received a promise by NATO not to admit new members to the alliance. He said the idea that Russia was betrayed is a myth. Which triggers my trolls.

🚨 SHOCK: Retired three-star Gen. Mark Hertling warns the U.S. could be dragged into ANOTHER Middle East war as Saudi Arabia seeks military help against the Houthis. HERTLING: “It's just going to draw the United States into another Middle Eastern war beyond what's going on in Iran right now.”

❗️About an hour ago, the Russians hit the territory of the Sumy community with KABs, - OVA Occupiers used 8 KABs, 4 of which were in the regional center. At least two people are injured. Another air bomb hit a high-rise building and hit a reservoir. Miraculously, serious consequences were avoided.

especially since the US had promised Ukraine its 1992 Borders in the Budapest Memorandum in exchange for them giving up their 1,100" nuclear weapons.. their Bombers ( which are being used to bomb them).. This was not a verbal Promise.. but a written one

The last time Trump criticized Putin was July 31st 2025, 443 days ago. The last time Trump criticized Zelenskyy is measured in hours, not days. The US taking the side of the aggressor is a truly terrible global strategic signal, and will destabilize the world for years to come.

Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Tesla paid just 4.9% of their profits in federal corporate taxes in 2025. They've seen their collective tax bill drop by $95B thanks to two rounds of Trump tax cuts. Meanwhile, tech layoffs in 2026 have already surpassed 2025. Trickle-down economics was always a scam.

Of all the many evil betrayals I’ve seen in the last 60 years I’ve been alive, I’m struggling to think of any that match what Trump and Musk did to innocent Ukrainian citizens while Putin was sending missiles this way. A trio to live on in infamy well after I am gone
