A year ago I walked up to the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory on my first day back in Oxford after a bit more than a decade. Today, I’m between thinking “gosh how’s it been a year already” and “has it really only been a year”. Excited to see what year #2 will bring 🤩

After much umming & aahing, I’ve finally decided to update our group name/logo. I’m not a natural overthinker, but this definitely proved fertile ground for an extensive crisis of confidence 🙈 In any case, here’s the new one. And credit to @inkscape.org for not breaking at my limited skills 😅
As peak tourist season approaches in Oxford, I am particularly enjoying early mornings in my College office with a view of the calm and empty front quad ☺️ I treasure my early mornings at work as they provide space to think and write amongst the craziness of everyday life as an academic 🌟 #OxfordLife
New paper alert! Who knew V incorporates into the A-site of a MAX phase? We were surprised! And then we tried all 3d metals... check out how it influences the magnetism of Nb2SnC. Great collaboration with @bluebananna.bsky.social and others! #MAXPhases #chemsky #matsky pubs.rsc.org/en/content/a...
Our next speaker is Anna Regoutz @bluebananna.bsky.social from the University of Oxford presenting her work on complex interfaces using HAXPES.
Lovely morning train journey to Teddington to visit the National Physical Laboratory for the @uksaf.bsky.social meeting today ☀️ Looking forward to a great program and my invited talk on an exciting interface explored using #HAXPES 💪
Christmas came early 🤩 I am incredibly fortunate to step into the (giant) footsteps of St Edmund Hall’s inorganic chemists, including Mike Mingos, who has kindly gifted me his extensive collection of crystal structure models. A dream for any solid state chemist and an incredibly useful resource 💛🧡❤️
A sunny good morning from the Radcliffe Camera and its fabulous rainbow makeup 🌈 #MorningPerson #MagicalBubble
New paper alert! Interested in #mxenes and #electrocatalysis? Check out our latest work on incorporating Mo into V-MXenes (and V- #MAXPhases) to make them more efficient catalysts for water splitting. Congratulations, Rose! Great collab with @bluebananna.bsky.social. pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....

And it’s a wrap 🎁 Final work day done and at least part of the to do list complete. Fantastic Fellows Christmas dinner in College to round off my first term back at Oxford and now on my final commute home for 2024 🚂 See you in the New Year, Oxford! 🍾🥂 #OxfordLife #ReadyForChristmas
Final work day pre-Christmas and about to head out for our group Christmas lunch 🎄 Going stereotypically Oxford by having it at the KA. We always used to go for group drinks there during my DPhil so nice to continue this tradition 🙌 The photo is from an early morning walk to work the other day 🧡
The countdown to Christmas is truly on now 🎄 A couple more days filled with admission meetings, ALL those thing I promised myself to get done before the holidays, and Christmas lunches and dinners 🙌 #BusyFinale #AlmostThere #OxfordLife
This week has been a week of (coffee fuelled) early mornings ☕️ With undergraduate admissions in full swing I needed those extra hours in the morning to keep up with everything else 😅 Oxford feels extra special pre sunrise with hardly any people around 🌙 #OxfordLife #MagicalSpires

A fantastic week at #F24MRS is coming to an end. Lots of great science and the opportunity to catch up with old friends and new 💙 Big shout out to the @roysocchem.bsky.social grant for carers who made it possible for me to be here with my 2yo in tow 💪 #TravellingScientist #AcademicMama
How about switching from Li and Na-based battery materials to fluorine ones? 💡 @brentmelot.bsky.social providing a convincing case to get creative with F ions at #F24MRS 💪 🔋
Start of another day of #F24MRS and thick snow on the 30th+ floor of my hotel ❄️ Energy levels are somewhat running low at this point of the week and it’s tempting to crawl back into bed and watch the snow fall, but plenty of great science still to come 💪 #KeepGoing #TravellingScientist
Really fantastic work by @virtualatoms.bsky.social on searching (theoretically) for crystalline anisotropic dielectrics 🙌 Check out atomate2 if you wanna have a go yourself: materialsproject.github.io/atomate2/
Want to work on oxides for power electronics? We have a 3.5 year DPhil (PhD) project on gallium oxide available in our group starting Oct 25 🙌 Do get in touch if you have any questions 💡 chem.web.ox.ac.uk/sitefiles/re...

Joel Varley from LLNL always promises high quality oxide theory and once more he didn’t disappoint 🤩 A true tour-de-force of gallium oxide theory and the complexity not only of oxygen defects but also gallium vacancies 🙌 #UWBG #OxidesAreFun #ItsComplicated
Inspiring talk by @lonepair.bsky.social at #F24MRS including fascinating assessments of the traditional roles of modelling and experiment compared to the role of the data-driven approach „Captain“ 🧑✈️
Good morning Boston ☀️ Excited for #F24MRS. A fully packed program with one too many interesting talks at the same time. Tough decisions will have to be made 😅 #TravellingScientist
Christmas comes early in Oxford #OxMas I’ve watched several Christmas trees arrive today and was fascinated by the engineering operation involved in positioning the tree on top of the medieval well in the front quad. A nice distraction during tutorial work today 🎄 #OfficeView #OxfordLife
Spending today at the IoP for a workshop on the topic of physics & AI. Curious to hear from a broad range of colleagues and stakeholders on what the drivers, opportunities and challenges are around the use and development of AI 💫
We currently have a project on gallium oxide thin films available through the competitive DTP route at UCL (Project ID: 2228cd1383) 🙌Deadline 8th January 2024 📢 Get in touch if you're interested! More info on the scheme here: www.ucl.ac.uk/epsrc-doctor...

Are you a #HAXPES user at beamline P22 at DESY? 💫The beamline team is looking for responses to a survey on their current review and scheduling processes ✍️ If you haven't received a link yet, but would like to add your thoughts, DM me 🙌
On the outskirts of Oxford this morning to take part in an exciting project 🤩 Always a pleasure (and challenge) to work in a professional recording environment 😅 The result will be revealed in the not too distant future 🤓
Short but productive trip to beamline P22 at DESY for a test experiment on the Polaris ambient pressure #HAXPES end station 🤩 Great team and many useful discussions 💪 Now hoping that my plane will make it through #StormBabet back to London 😅 #TravellingScientist
Off to Trieste for a couple of days of meetings at Elettra 💫 Looking forward to discussing all things photoelectron spectroscopy and to catch up with collaborators who have become close friends over the years (and possibly to some Italian treats) 🤩🍝 #TravellingScientist
