I am reading a lot about Ed tech and AI this month, to get caught up. And I want to say one thing — this is every previous wave of ed tech extraction at one time, on steroids. Not even the Apple/microsoft school wars comes close.

The discussions around AI (seemingly unavoidable) at #THEdigitalUK reflect those in the sector. A spectrum of optimism and pessimism. AI is not wholly good. It is not wholly bad. Nor is it neutral. It's complex. It's clear we've already accepted or ignore the bad #altc
One example of a lack of human centred design, is the lighting in lecture theatres. IMO learning space design should be iterative. Let people live in a space. To experience it. Change it as we learn. Instead they're installed and only change on the next refurb round #MyRetinas #altc #THEdigitalUK
The question of sustainability and AIs impact on climate raised but not directly addressed. We know the answer but saying it out loud would make education's 'we're going to use it anyway to not be left behind' approach very difficult to justify #altc #THEdigitalUK
As ever, technology is forcing change in education. A shame that AI should is the driver for these changes, such as those to assessment, but necessity is the mother of invention. It feels energy would be better spent on getting education to actively change instead of react #altc #THEdigitalUK
Who suffers? @puiyin.bsky.social touched on that in her opener. Who's data? Environmental impact? Workers rights? THE answers would suggest we shouldn't be using AI, if we act ethically. So, we ignore them or we are told the questions themselves are needless and hyperbolic #altc #THEdigitalUK
