Hey seriously, literally in the bills it says they'll also use identifying information, such as your age data for "other purposes". That means your data goes into a government surveillance database. This would be for ANY *OS*, which is the thing your fucking PC runs off of. Call your reps NOW.

New US Congress bill proposal requires all operating system providers to verify ages #Gaming #USA #PCGaming #US #AgeVerification

You better wake the fuck up now. If we don't make their lives ABSOLUTELY FUCKING MISERABLE, we're going be the ones who get shafted. And HARD. You best believe that everything about the Internet we know is going to die and everything we know and love with it. I've made my calls today. You need to.

The package of censorship and surveillance bills brought up in todays markup has been advanced Continue to contact your representatives and demand this legislation be opposed. Tell your family and friends, explain how these bills are not what they appear, and ask them to join us in opposition!

The Internet as we know it right now, is very much in danger. The things you are doing here now, in this space, may be locked off from you for no reason. And these big tech companies? They can't WAIT to restrict you. We can't sit by and let out of touch politicians and big companies take this space

Even if incest kinks aren’t your thing and even if you find it disgusting or weird, this is dangerous. They’ve come after strangulation and seem to be coming for more. This isn’t about “safety” it’s about controlling online anonymity and further shaming sexuality. Wishing my friends in the UK luck ❤️

well, it’s official they’re looking to make possession worth up to 2 years in prison, 5 years for publishing/sharing im really upset and idk what to do

This post is going viral, but this isn't walking back. It's reiterating the initial press release. There's no new information in this post, aside from them saying they're using a different ID partner (which doesn't solve that problem) and the Reddit joke. Everything else is the same. Keep pushing.

Discord is already starting to walk things back a little, so people should keep doing what they're doing (cancel Nitro, leave feedback/criticism, direct contact through support tickets/phone/email/etc)

Tl;dr: The vast majority of adults will never have to interact with our age assurance systems and their experience won't change, because we know Discord and how people use it, so we're designing to respect privacy and deliver a safer experience while minimizing friction for adults.

Hey folks –

I’ve been on Discord since very early 2016 and actually joined the company in 2017. Safety is one of my areas, so today’s announcement on our blog is something I’ve been pretty involved with. I’ve always cared about Discord's approach to privacy (E2EE for A/V was another of my projects here), so I figured I’d add some more context to today's news.

I can say confidently that the vast majority of people will never see age verification. I say this because we launched age assurance in the UK and Australia in 2025, and we have some pretty good data on this now. The idea here is that we can pre-identify most adults based on what we already know (not including your messages!), and that looks to get us pretty far here. No face scans, no IDs, for the vast majority of adults.

it drives you insane how much erosion of freedom is justified by concern for kids when the people who actually hurt them will never face consequences

Y'all gonna start acknowledging the parallels yet? Y'all gonna start defending art, intimacy, and sex as basic human expressions? Y'all gonna start realizing that these deranged puritans don't have an ounce of goodwill in their bodies and literally just want to control every aspect of our lives?

A screenshot of the first three paragraphs from Wikipedia's article on "Degenerate art" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degenerate_art).

It reads:

Degenerate art (German: Entartete Kunst) was a term adopted in the 1920s by the Nazi Party in Germany to describe modern art. During the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler, German modernist art, including many works of internationally renowned artists, was removed from state-owned museums and banned in Nazi Germany on the grounds that such art was an "insult to German feeling", un-German, Freemasonic, Jewish, or Communist in nature. Those identified as degenerate artists were subjected to sanctions that included dismissal from teaching positions, being forbidden to exhibit or to sell their art, and in some cases being forbidden to produce art.

Degenerate Art also was the title of a 1937 exhibition held by the Nazis in Munich, consisting of 650 modernist artworks that the Nazis had taken from museums, that were poorly hung alongside graffiti and text labels mocking the art and the artists.[1] Designed to inflame public opinion against modernism, the exhibition subsequently traveled to several other cities in Germany and Austria.

While modern styles of art were prohibited, the Nazis promoted paintings and sculptures that were traditional in manner and that exalted the "blood and soil" values of racial purity, militarism, and obedience. Similar restrictions were placed upon music, which was expected to be tonal and free of any jazz influences; disapproved music was termed degenerate music. Films and plays were also censored.[2]

Heritage Foundation, backers of Project 2025, have issued a call to criminalize porn by detailing specific types of imagery that should be illegal, including "deviate sexual intercourse," "female genitals," and "nudity." Only "civilizing" images that point to "marital sex" should be allowed.

What gets me is that fanfic/fanart creators have been talking about the subject of getting dogpiled, harassed, and pressured *for so many years now* about making dark/unsettling content, and let nobody listened to the canary in the coal mine because “stupid fandom drama”

alternatively we as a society could realize that fiction is about playing with dolls and that horrible things happening to them doesn't matter because it's all toys. but that seems more complicated than just bringing back big box PC games and publishing books alongside them
