Back to making #Content in hopes someone might see it and then read the book. Does it work? I don’t know. But despite my discomfort, it is fun working with Linda (not on this site) to make tiny videos.

Journalist and critic. I'm writing a book about convenience. I'm on the radio. Everything is at gabebullard.com. Basel, CH.
This was such a good discussion. Thank you for hanging out with me and @johnnygamber.bsky.social, @gbullard.bsky.social!
Episode 243 is up! 📻 erasable.us/243 This is a fun episode. We talk to @gbullard.bsky.social about his new book "Against Convenience". It's not a nostalgic treatise on why we should use analog tools. It actually goes deep on the modern conveniences in our lives and what we give up when using them.
Finally I get to talk pencils with people who really know. (I'm sorry to all of my followers who I know IRL, but I've seen you nodding off as I get into the details of graphite core grading.)

"Where can we look today, amid cultural stagnation, for American art not just evincing but capacitating the good life, for aesthetics of majoritarianism against authoritarians, for flourishes of freedom against fascism?" - must read from @annakornbluh.bsky.social

What moves books? Pictures of them with analog tech, I assume. Does this do anything?

Got an angry email about how I fail to mention things in the “lightly sourced” book. Then the person declared they didn’t finish it. I shouldn’t respond to these things, but I just sent page numbers for the things I failed to mention, then the page range for the citations.
For folks curious about the book…I narrate the audiobook. You can hear me place emphasis on words!
I started the audio version this morning. I'm one chapter in but I love it already. I've had scramblings of thoughts on friction and technology; this is the book I've been waiting for.
I don't just write about failed technology. Sometimes I write about fun things like yodeling. Here I am on 99% Invisible chasing yodeling from the Alps to U.S. country music and back.
Tootle of a Devilish Song - 99% Invisible
The sounds of yodeling have been echoing through the Alps for at least 400 years, likely more. But its origins are shrouded in mountain mist. The eerie, warbling sound might have been first used by ca...

reading @gbullard.bsky.social's Against Convenience really made me think about how many of our beloved conveniences come at the cost of our relationships and community--so I wrote about it: www.theatlantic.com/culture/2026...

I got an invite from a professor who asked if I'd be on his podcast, but could not guarantee it would drive any sales of the book. Not to undercut my mission here, but folks, there's nothing I would like more than to be on your academic, obscure, or niche podcast. I'll go on the big ones, too.

The Conveniences I Used to Write a Book About Inconvenience (Definitely Not AI)

I think I'll see real success in my critical work as soon as I take an idea that's existed in theory for decades and rebrand it using modern slang. The tasteslop strivecels are buy-maxxing.
My complaint with Axios has always been that it so clearly doesn't respect the readers' intelligence. It's babying in its framing and "brevity." It purports to break down complicated issues, but it really just says no issue is actually that complicated.
