People are right to be incensed, but there are more names to uplift. ICE killed an immigrant man named Silverio Villegas González in Chicagoland. He had children. Victor Manuel Diaz was kidnapped in Minneapolis and died in ICE custody on January 14. Their names deserve to be repeated, too.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Claudette Colvin, whose refusal to move seats on a segregated bus helped spark the civil rights movement, dies at 86.
Faculty colleagues, if you have a union but haven’t yet joined, I urge you to think seriously about it. Now’s the time to build power, deepen relations, and get ready. We’re up for a fight, and there is no thriving in isolation.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has proposed disastrous cuts to our city's libraries while setting aside $5M for a ShotSpotter replacement. As library associate Sara Heymann told me, “Libraries embody everything we need to fight back against fascism.” My piece on what’s at stake and how to fight back:
You Can’t Fight Fascism While Defunding Libraries
“Libraries embody everything that we need right now to fight back against fascism," says Sara Heymann.

Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw. The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.
Tonight, in Chicago, North Side rapid responders and community members held a vigil. At least ten people were abducted by ICE in Rogers Park alone today. We uplifted the message RESIST ICE in lights. We spoke out, sang together, grieved, and reaffirmed our commitment to defending our neighbors.
Turns out you can turn out people to vote if you give them someone worth voting for....

CALL PRITZKER TO DEMAND HE REMOVE ILLINOIS STATE POLICE FROM BROADVIEW: (Chicago) 312-814-2121 or 312-814-2122 (Springfield) 217-782-6830 or 217-782-6831 Hearing impaired (TTY): 888-261-3336 I called and talked about how the state cops joined ICE in brutalizing protesters today.
Your state troopers participated in Friday's fascist photo op attack at Broadview. Get the false charges against protesters dropped immediately!
Illinois is not a photo opportunity or warzone, it’s a sovereign state where our people deserve rights, respect, and answers.
All charges brought against protesters at Broadview today must be dropped. When cops and agents attack crowds without provocation, they make shit up to justify their attacks (in his case, an attack waged on a cooperative crowd to produce fascist social media content). These charges must be dropped.
BREAKING: Our client Mario Guevara, an Emmy-winning journalist detained by ICE in retaliation for livestreaming law enforcement activity, will be deported tomorrow to El Salvador. Mario and his family are being punished for his reporting. This cruelty is meant to stifle our free press.
BREAKING: At least 72 Palestinians have been killed in relentless Israeli attacks throughout the besieged Gaza Strip since dawn, medical sources have told Al Jazeera. 🔴 LIVE updates: aje.io/gikgd0
I’m on the ground near Broadview. Because of illegal fence, we are at a nearby intersection.
I'm not asking people to stop talking about Kimmel or the coming repression tied to their latest martyr project—all of this is important. I am just saying, can we work in more discussion of our neighbors being hunted and protesters being gassed, beaten, and shot with pepper balls in Chicagoland?
In Little Village, residents are blowing actual whistles to warn neighbors about ICE. blockclubchi.co/46mVKSq
“We’re going to teach the truth,” Prof. Leonard Bright said. “We don’t know what the consequences of that may be...But we do know that if we were to censor the truth…that’s going to damage our society. That’s going to damage our students.” 👏👏 www.texastribune.org/2025/09/15/t...
Faculty, advocacy groups fear Texas A&M firing threatens academic freedom
The firing happened over two years after Texas A&M stressed its support for academic freedom and amid a changing higher education landscape.

Legacy media and cable news reduced Trump's aggression against Chicago to a question of whether troops would be sent immediately. When he said he was taking his fascist military spectacle elsewhere, those media players declared the situation over—while waves of federal agents attack our neighbors.
BREAKING: At least 53 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since the early hours of this morning, report our team on the ground, citing sources at local hospitals. 🔴 LIVE updates: aje.io/224nz2
I may act like an adult, but really I’m just a girl who wishes should could lay in the safety of her Granny’s lap one more time.
Someone asked me what victory against the forces seeking to occupy Chicago looks like. Obviously, those forces being repelled is the goal, but there are layers to what success looks like in these deteriorating conditions. The first is to successfully resist the normalization of military occupation.
As we prep for the start of fall classes, I want to take a moment to shout out all the wonderful university librarians and library staff who work tirelessly to ensure we have easy, open access to all we need to teach, learn, and research. This professor is grateful for all that you do! 🤎

Not enough work on curriculum and pedagogy takes seriously factoring in labor politics for educators and other school staff as part of good design and practice.
If anybody in the learning sciences (or beyond) wants to write a paper for ICLS (International Conference of the Learning Sciences) about how Google and others invoke our field (or a version of it, anyway) to sell their products and what that means for learning scientists, HMU, because I'm curious.
Google is also trying to lock in schools to a particular set of ideas that it claims to be based on "learning science" with its new LearnLM/Guided learning bot. It's a *theory lock-in* to a very attenuated version of learning theory. blog.google/outreach-ini...

Who is doing counter-recruitment organizing for ICE? As the economy worsens, those jobs and the loan forgiveness offer will become more attractive to unpoliticized individuals. There needs to be a clear social cost for even considering joining those ranks.
I am so excited to join the Executive Committee as the new Secretary of @islsnews.bsky.social! The learning sciences has always been an intellectual home for me, and I'm so happy I get to serve the Society in this role! education.wisc.edu/news/uw-madi...
