Quoting s'thing @cnygren.bsky.social & I are publishing soon: "the literacy argument is being made in advance of its necessity...it presumes a state in which those who are “AI illiterate” are disempowered, precisely in order to make an argument in favor of compulsory indoctrination in its use."
“If it's this embedded in the world, then it needs to be embedded in the learning and in the coursework…”
You will be surprised to learn that I do not believe there is a “moral imperative“ to teach educators about AI.
“Teaching educators about AI is a ‘moral imperative’, said Randi Weingarten, the AFT president.” “And without outside funding, it was a choice between taking big tech’s money or doing nothing, she said.”
QUESTION: is there any footage of data centers IN Canada and their noise output that you know of that’s legit? please send me the info if you do!!
I think about this finding a lot: "Students whose school uses AI for many reasons are more likely to report that they or a friend of theirs has had a back-and-forth conversation with AI, like chatbots, in potentially troubling ways." From @cdt.org's report:
Hand in Hand: Schools’ Embrace of AI Connected to Increased Risks to Students
Artificial intelligence (AI) has continued to alter the educational experiences of teachers, students, and parents during the 2024-25 school year. The frequency and variety of AI uses continues to gro...

Last call for the free, online @civicsoftech.bsky.social conference happening this week! Registration closes tomorrow, Wednesday, August 5, at 12pm ET. For more information on the sessions and to register, go to: www.civicsoftechnology.org/2026conference
Happy to share that today I added to my t-shirt wardrobe and furthered my goal of only broadcasting my support for public media, breweries, bookstores, local taverns, shit talking technology, birch trees, and the Chicago Cubs.
Dan sees and articulates the role of AI very clearly so this is a good discussion
We're joined this week by @danmcquillan.bsky.social to talk decomputing, dehumanisation, dealignment, and some things that don't start with de- as well! politechs.dev/episodes/s02...
John Oliver covers police surveillance in his amazing, cutting way and gives a shout out to “Your Data Will Be Used Against You.” !!!! youtu.be/wagYax-0yJI?...
I’m with @biblioracle.bsky.social: I’m disgusted too at the Harvard administrators who decided to fire @janerosenzweig.bsky.social. Read John’s piece at:

Cool new project from @mxdylanp.bsky.social and Natalie Rae and their lab: it’s a blog series titled, "Unearthing the Cloud: Civic Action in the AI Era”. The first post explores the question, “'[W]ho gets to have a voice in decisions that shape the places where people live?'"

I’m curious if similar documents exist that’ve been authored by PR departments at Big Tech companies for coaching edu-influencers on how to speak about the latest revolutionary ed-tech products.
Exclusive: We obtained a leaked playbook that Flock gives to cops to coach them on "how to speak to city council" to avoid getting their contracts canceled. Includes strategies like "own the narrative" by talking to mayor "before public comment periods" www.404media.co/own-the-narr...

So excited for the @civicsoftech.bsky.social conference this week! Especially excited to highlight “Voices from the Caregiver Resistance to Edtech.” Hope you can join us Thursday at 1pm EST!
This year’s @civicsoftech.bsky.social conference schedule is now live! Join me and @alliethrall.bsky.social for a panel featuring @lbyock.bsky.social, @kellyclancy.bsky.social, and Chad Hamilton. We’ll reflect on their experiences as caregivers challenging ed-tech. See the full schedule at:
Listen to @tressiemcphd.bsky.social when she writes that AI is "the backbone of a superstructure that merges regressive politics with unchecked economic power in the guise of technological innovation” - and then teach about and against the technologies with the help of the books she cites:

A.I. is a political theory. And it is gobbling up our democracy.

One more reason to consider that data center resistance can and should be IMO a site of learning and organizing for educators, students, and their families.

I’ve seen in two culture /higher ed magazines recently the claim that the printing press engendered a crisis of authority at universities bc anyone could publish what they wanted and people could learn things without universities. This is not true.
As a parent, I guess I now need to be sure to clarify with my extended family and my kids’ friends’ parents that no I am not in fact amused by their desire to surveil my kids and violate their privacy with LLMs for shits and giggles WTAF
i'm so glad i'm not a parent, i don't think i could handle this shit without daily anger management sessions.
We’re early in the analysis phase, but a common theme @alliethrall.bsky.social and I are noticing in our survey and interview data for our study about how and why caregivers challenge ed-tech is caregivers’ desire to return to earlier forms of technology education, including lessons on typing...
I wonder if students today would be less likely to lean on AI for writing assignments if schools had made sure they could touch-type (at least 60wpm) before having them submit all their assignments online. 1/🧵

exactly. I don't know how to get people to see this and act accordingly. it's disheartening and disappointing to see so many colleagues, and even friends and family, just not care.
The "Winner" in question is Langdon Winner. The piece in question is his "Do Artifacts Have Politics," which is something I incorporate into every philosophy of technology, computing ethics, or tech ethics course I teach.

🙋 For those of us who would like to read Winner, who is the author?
Going to do a thread, using some of my own (incl. older) work, to clear up some of these relevant concepts. Hope it helps builds conceptual hygiene and immunity to hyped claims about “AI” capabilities. 1/🧵
In my work, as in theoretical computer science, we distinguish between (exact) algorithms, heuristics (no guarantees), and approximation algorithm (approx. guarantees) Clear distinctions is relevant in many contexts, for instance this one in cognitive science link.springer.com/article/10.1...
Reviewer 2 continues to be THE WORST
Listen- If you are going to feed my unpublished paper into an AI data set, can you at least delete the prompt from your review before submitting? Not only is this unethical but it's a goddamn waste of my time. I'd rather have gotten a desk reject.
These are the AI literacy practices we should be teaching in schools.
I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
the google earth example demonstrates that they can turn AI shit off. the right thing to do is thank everyone who has shown how AI has caused, is causing, and will cause harm to people. acknowledge the harm done and make it right for those already harmed. but first of all: turn it the fuck off.
It’s important to understand “age verification” and “kick the kids off social media” laws as a gift to Big Tech. These policies allow surveillance capitalism to chug along full steam ahead and let Silicon Valley giants off the hook. Instead of regulating their biz model, we just put up age gates
