honestly a little surprised that aipac would just come out and say they would rather have a republican govt in the us, with all the horrors that brings, than someone who supports rights for palestinians

is there a term for this kind of half-covert linguistic act in linguistics or philosophy yet?
Quite simply, it is a way to say 'shut up faggot' whilst still being able to claim a defensive position. We're still men, still 'the problem' even if the implication is we are substandard diluted versions. 9/
Norwegian uses "troll" for things that aren't actual trolls, e.g.: • korstroll/krosstroll 'starfish' (lit. cross troll) • rumpetroll 'tadpole' (lit. butt troll) • skrukketroll 'woodlouse' (lit. crease/crack troll) • trappetroll 'slinky' (lit. stair troll) #linguistics
wrote and erased my first 100 responses because just too angry at this horrible person (kathleen)
This is Stock's "collateral damage" in action

it's so easy to destroy things, but also building things is not nearly as hard as the status quo makes it out to be .. let us all raise our expectations of those people we allow to have power over us
You won't regret clicking on this beautifully told story by @lsommer.bsky.social about the Pacific Ocean and how the Trump regime is opening some marine monuments to commercial fishing.
another example of how the right weaponizes seemingly useful and innocuous tropes .. why they so good at this and the left so bad
Speaking for the first time since ralliers began assembling in support of her stance against transgender participation in women’s sports, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham said this was an opportunity for the WNBA to uphold its values of diversity and inclusion. nyti.ms/4fHr4Qn
In my humble brown opinion, the trans rights movement urgently needs to draw from decolonial movements which have successfully toppled entire regimes by creating radical organizations that encourage and publicize targeted boycotts of specific companies that fund and enable genocide.
hate to break it to you baby but we are all engaging in forced labor [capitalism]
Alex Byrne thinks that OUP should not have published books on sex and gender that he regards as sub-standard. I'm old enough to remember when saying OUP should not have published books on sex and gender that one considers sub-standard was an affront to freedom of speech. I wonder who argued that?
why do I just automatically read alex byrne as talking in bad faith? cannot help but feel this is a kind of moral failing of mine, though one grounded in experience (sorry I should not be sarcastic)
these things are usually boring but this one, rarely, is NOT
@grantamag.bsky.social and its writers have some summer reading recommendations. Includes— John Berger Tove Jansson Vladimir Sorokin's short stories (careful) Vasily Grossman's WWII journalism Hardwick's Sleepless Nights Szabó's The Fawn
though it's nice to see the spanish team holding palestinian flag etc it makes me sad to realize I no longer really believe the evidence of my eyes when it comes to photo & video in this sloppy age
What community means, if we gone get this revolution popping like you say y'all say you want while you keep playing, is that the strong protect the weak. If you have force or strength or power, you use it to care for & defend those who have less of it. We all matter & we're all coming along.
perhaps its time to stop publishing with hachette too
One of the world's largest book publishers will begin to sell 'safety covers' for LGBTQIA+ books Source: https://www.wearequeeraf.com/understand-the-lgbtqia-news-new-guidance-makes-it-next-to-impossible-for-schools-to-be-supportive-of-trans-childrens-social-transition/
this is so far from ok and there is no standing by and observing any longer for those who have any presence or power to do anything at all in these situations, there is no more time
Just had meeting with kiddo's school. She has been fully supported, treated with full equality & dignity for years. All of that changes from September. Full segregation & humiliation across the board. The school staff cried in the meeting. This will absolutely lead to children's deaths 1/2
world cup 2026 feels like some (bread and) circuses shit even more than usual tbh

new romantasy dedicated bookshop is opening in Oxford today and 10/10, no notes
Byrne is proud of what he did and recognises his part in harming millions of trans people. I think his colleagues at MIT should do something. He has, on his way to ruin the lives of many, debased the whole institution of philosophy, MIT, Philosophical Studies, and most of you sat and watched
If you can get people to agree trans women have no place in women's sport you are getting them to concede they are not really women and everything else flows from that. They have said this themselves as they campaigned for the ban.
"It's just sports," "It will only affect a few people," & "It'll also be used against cis women" are, IMHO, all equally not-great takes on today's SCOTUS ruling, just different angles. The Supreme Court ruled it's okay to discriminate against a certain class of people. Full stop. That is a horror.
leiter dissing other people's relationship choices is an icing on the cake type bad look I have to say
This is razor sharp in a way I've not read from any other writer on the topic. So many lines I could quote. It's absolutely excellent. Go read it.
