Safe Food Advocacy Europe

SAFE is a non-profit independent organisation aimed at ensuring that consumers' health and concerns stay at the core of EU food legislation. www.safefoodadvocacy.eu

📱 France has become the first EU country to ban social media for under-15s, with other European countries considering similar restrictions. ⚠️ Social media can fuel body image concerns and eating disorders. The Digital Services Act offers an opportunity for the EU to better protect children online.

🏖️Tired of seeing plastic waste and other packaging on the beach? In late May, ADOC has held educational seminars across Italy, reaching 300 students, to increase their awareness of sustainable packaging and the environmental impact of excessive plastic use. Well done!

Through our partnership with Healthy Food Healthy Planet, SAFE provided an in-house foresight training to strengthen our ability to anticipate change and drive healthier, more sustainable food systems.🧩 🤝The workshop inspired meaningful discussions on our future priorities and actions!

This week, we had our General Assembly, where we met with our members to go through our activities in the last year and to define our next steps, as we consolidate our growth. 👉Here is a recap of our work within the last year of lobbying for food safety on behalf of European consumers.

Great exchange with our members, at our General Assembly, discussing past and future activities as we consolidate our growth. Honoured by the participation of Giulia Mauri, from SAFE’s board and Loris Di Pietrantonio, from DG Employment: 📢"Civil society organisations are the soul of democracy!"

These addressed the labelling and traceability of NGT1 plants, with detection methods to prevent this category of genetically modified organisms from being invisible to producers and consumers.

We regret the approval by @europarl.europa.eu of the compromise on #NGTs, disregarding key safeguards contained in the compromise amendments presented by a group of MEPs. @eppgroup.bsky.social @ecrgroup.bsky.social @socialistsanddemocrats.eu @greens-efa.eu @left.eu @reneweurope.bsky.social

⛔ Microplastic pollution is another knowledge gap, currently. Harmonised data will only be available after 2028. Microplastics add risk, because they can produce eutrophication. @eppgroup.bsky.social @socialistsanddemocrats.eu @ecrgroup.bsky.social @greens-efa.eu @left.eu @reneweurope.bsky.social

Attending the @efsa.europa.eu 35th Emerging Risk Stakeholder Group, in #Granada, where we call for the @ec.europa.eu to stop plans to deregulate fertilisers from animal and plant effluents, due to lack of harmonised, comparable data to conduct a risk assessment. 🐄🥬

👶The primary acute health effect of nitrate concentration, known as cyanosis or ‘blue baby syndrome’, potentially life-threatening, is not subject to systematic monitoring at EU level.

💧 Data show that average nitrate concentration in EU groundwater remained stable between 2007 and 2023, which means precautions should be strengthened, not weakened.
