After a good 1st generation the Speckled Wood (bont zandoogje, P aegeria) suffers from the drought on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects. Numbers this summer are much lower. Still it remains a common and widespread butterfly who will recover once conditions become favourable.

Birder first but anything natural living or long gone (fossils), living in Felixstowe South East Suffolk, England
A couple of pics of this morning's Striped Hawkmoth and an Ancylosis oblitella also new for my trap
A first ever for my trap this morning a Striped Hawkmoth
A Pic of the Bedstraw Hawkmoth at Landguard yesterday
The recent election results from Clacton makes a complete farce of our political system but it's times like these that i miss The Mash Report sadly satire is dead for us killed by the men at the Beeb
A couple of decent moffs from this morning's haul a Scarce bordered Straw and my second Ethmia bipunctella of the year
Ethmia bipunctella the first at my trap for several years now, a mostly coastal species in Suffolk
Gianno (The Hood) Infantina with the latest World Cup, to be rolled out next year, it's 24 carat gold, honest
Although I've never seen the adult Cosmopterix zieglerella, a nationally scarce b moth there is still plenty of proof that they still exist in the Deben Lodge area of Falkenham/Felixstowe as the leaf mines on Hop (Humulus lupulus) are very distinctive
For GOD'S SAKE. Massive landowners call for ban on disposable BBQs, but at the same time call for "a lifting of the ban on controlled burning" 'You oiks shouldn't burn moorland - that's OUR job' Entitled double standards. Ban both. @georgemonbiot.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/world/2026/a...

News that the 2 Black Storks were still at Hemley this morning a message i found irresistible so got there and 1 showed distantly in a muddy creek before taking off joining the 2nd bird before gaining height and crossing the River Deben
Almost any building, school, or parking lot could be turned into a #solarpower plant and provide #cleanenergy for our cities and homes. RT if think more buildings should get a #solar upgrade. #ActOnClimate #ClimateEmergency #ClimateCrisis #GreenNewDeal #renewable #energy
I’ve signed a letter calling for Angela Eagle and Ofwat to reject the last-ditch deal from Thames Water's creditors. Can you sign and share it as well? weownit.org.uk/act-now/sign...

Springwatch icon, humanist, and probably the UK's best-loved birdwatcher, Bill Oddie, has died aged 85. Very sad. Thank you for a lifetime of helping us understand nature.
Not had Ethmia quadrillella for several years now so it was pleasing to see it again this morning in me trap a Nationally scarce B moth
Amazed to get this Sussex Emerald on the last day of a week's stay at Minsmere. It's a second county record for Suffolk
@neilsmothman.bsky.social whilst walking around Landseer Park Ipswich I noted some Small Ranunculus larvae on a few Great Lettuce flower heads
As my better half was needing a hair trim at her Daughter's in Ipswich I decided to look at Pipers Vale for Brown Hairstreak but it being overcast i tried Landseer Park, Ipswich and got a pristine female on some Blackthorn bushes there whatever the provenance they are my favorite butterfly
OK I cracked this morning with a new species of bird for me less than 25 minutes from home and a county tick to boot. It was great to see a good many Suffolk friends that I rarely bump into due to my mostly patch birding these days around the Felixstowe Peninsula 👍 a pic of the Hudsonian Godwit
Just like the Queen of Spain Fritillary (kleine parelmoer, I lathonia) the Swallowtail (koninginnenpage, P machaon) loves hot weather. I found a few in every 15min count I did today in my region in South Veluwe (NL).
Big numbers of Queen of Spain Fritillary (kleine parelmoer, Issoria lathonia) in my region on South Veluwe. Veel kleine parelmoers vandaag op de Zuid Veluwe.
A very early Brown hairstreak (Thecla betulae, sleedoornpage) on our transect in the Wageningen Rhine-floodplains. Een heel vroege sleedoornpage op ons transect in the uiterwaarden bij Wageningen.
I was delighted to be asked to contribute a few illustrations to the Donegal Bird Report, excellently compiled by Derek Brennan . 2025 was an incredible year for rare and scarce birds in Donegal with several county and Irish firsts discovered. The report can be viewed at zenodo.org/records/2124...
Let’s settle this, is Nigel Farage a racist? Like if he is. RT if he is going to lose Clacton to Count Binface.
Having a look around the Apple Ermine tents at Felixstowe Ferry I'm coming to the conclusion that they are looking to establish themselves 🤪
My first Dewicks Plusia in over 9 years of trapping considering I'm not too far from Landguard also Eudemis Profundana a more regular micro plus the Painted Lady caterpillar still munching its way through the mega tough Scotch Thistle leaves
Mean number of butterflies per 1000m on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects per habitat last week. The high number on heathland comes from Silver-studded Blue (heideblauwtje, P argus), which can be very abundant. Overall Meadow Brown (bruin zandoogje, M jurtina) was the most abundant species.
