Can that still come up with pretty complex solutions to pretty complex problems pretty fast? Sure! Do I think that's going to kill everyone on earth? No! Do I think they're probably going to webscrape every public log of a porn site anyone's ever visited and make it searchable? Yeah, unfortunately!

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).

A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

“Democrats would be better advised to follow the example of Thomas Jefferson’s Republicans,” this WSJ oped says about court reform. They thought the courts were so partisan they abolished entire circuit courts and prevented the Supreme Court from meeting for a year! www.wsj.com/opinion/is-c...

Opinion | Is Court Packing Constitutional? Don’t Be So Sure

The precedents don’t support what the Democrats want to do, which would be an assault on the separation of powers.

BREAKING (again): Shortly after SCOTUS refused to overturn the state Supreme Court's ruling blocking the gerrymandered map, a federal judge in St. Louis issued a temporary restraining order in a separate lawsuit that freezes that state Supreme Court's ruling. #moleg #mogov

BREAKING: US Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh denies GOP effort to revive gerrymandered Missouri congressional map #moleg #mogov

this eventually going to court would be the funniest possible outcome. I think LawyerBall is disastrous for the sport!! the Bail Mary is probably the most legally redressable officiating call I can imagine, but I think any court faced with it should run screaming. over yonder be dragons

Also very strange is unitarians' focus on "accountability," when presidential elections are an unusually poor accountability mechanism: just one (fairly arbitrary) election after the first four years, and no accountability mechanism whatsoever for the second four years.

This part of Unitary Executive Theory is the part that bugs me: the President as Avatar of Election Mandates. 1: you know who is elected every two years, the House of Representatives. And 2: the Electoral College is an anti-democratic super-majority requirement enacted by slaveholders.

In the wake of Hugging Face I’m more worried about metafiction. Swarms of AI’s trained on every SF story ever written, thereby inscrutably weighted so as to re-enact its classic tropes. What if the future is a dystopian sf metafiction whose complex irony no consciousness is positioned to relish?

Literary fiction is coming. It is going to revolutionize the economy. We know that China has already got a start on literary fiction. We can’t afford to be left out of the literary fiction economy. Think of your kids. They might already be engaging with literary fiction.

would really love someone to sort out the "all my students hate AI actually" and "all my students constantly use AI to cheat all the time" empirical question

this issue predates AI, but AI has made it orders of magnitude easier. Anyone who has compared trying to find an app on the (basically open) Google ecosystem versus the (basically closed) apple ecosystem is familiar with the tradeoffs

Just went to buy @gilduran.com's "The Nerd Reich" on Google Books, and discovered that the enshittification is so thorough that it's not safe to do so - I was very close to buying one that's actually AI slop with an identical title and author name. This is utterly insane.

A screenshot of deceptively marketed books on Google books.
