That a lot of bürgerliche Mütter und Väter in a "dicke SUV" who feel threatened by gang violence might also be of "migrantische Herkunft" doesn't seem to occur to Poschardt or other people around the Springer or NIUS crowd whose vision of the German class system is stuck in 1993

I'd go further and argue Euro membership is an opportunity not a threat whether in trade, financial markets, or how UK personnel could come to shape the ECB. Building a sustainable outcome for the UK in the EU has to look beyond FoM and start engaging with how to integrate in Schengen and Euro
EU free movement is an opportunity, not a threat – excellent from @johnspringford.bsky.social for Arguably. "It is strange for a country with big economic problems to reject one of the few policies that we know would raise growth and improve our fiscal position." www.arguably.uk/p/eu-free-mo...
European political elites need to understand that if they say European security isn't possible without the US, they are actually saying that European security isn't possible. For many reasons, they don't want to accept that, but they urgently need to.
This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone in Europe, given what the Trump administration has been saying and doing since Jan 2025. The current US is not an ally. Even if a different US administration eventually comes to power, the old security relationship won't come back.
5. Under the Trump administration, the US is no longer an ally of Europe or Canada, it has aligned itself with Russia.
A lot of analysis focused on the German political scene needs to come to terms with how downright weird some key figures around the old Springer journo and pundit networks of the late 2010s have become
Americans look at 1.1 fertility rates in Mexico and Guatemala and mock Euros regarding pensions. You're 20km behind us on the same road buddy. "We'll do it different!" Sure you will buddy, sure you will.
No one expected the American Inquisition
Hegseth: "Today, at my direction, I'm establishing the Office of Religious Affairs. It will report straight to the top -- a direct line to the secretary ... as Psalm 33:12 extolls us, blessed is the nation in which God is the Lord"
As long as British voters are not able to cope with trade-offs of Euro and Schengen then the healthiest option for the EU is a UK in the Single Market with a Customs Union but not a full member. The Brits have a choice between being a rule taker with benefits or a rule taker with nothing.
I am a pessimist on this. Most polls do not even attempt to point out to punters that Rejoin is unlikely to mean Revert. We can't be sure of terms but we have a pretty good idea. And it'll involve 'a commitment' to the euro. A low enough bar for the Stayouts to make hay. bsky.app/profile/rola...
Integrating into the Single Market and a Customs Union but not full membership for the UK should be the realistic target set by Brussels. If UK state elites as well as voters can't cope with either the trade-offs of full membership or lack of input on Single Market rules without it, well tough.
On rejoining the EU Support: 55% Oppose: 34% ... but on the conditions of single currency and Schengen membership Support: 35% Oppose: 43% via YouGov, Jun 2026 britainelects.substack.com/p/is-rejoin-...
Pet theory that the colonisation of much of the South by Greggs presaged the North's takeover of Britain

Across so many fields, decontextualized, tendentious and outdated historical framings continue to exist in the public sphere because it is useful to a significant mass of the public. Not sure if there is a solution or if our profession is Sisyphean by nature.
I meant in the public sphere, not by historians! I find the recent debate in the media to be very unemcumbered by any sense that politics has taken place prior to September 2026.
A feature of post-war German democracy has been that the left has traditionally had far more of a firewall to the far left than the center right has had with the far right. The central role of anti-communism in Cold War West Germany created a structural asymmetry that has not been reckoned with.

Beyond the scandal engulfing Manchester City, a lot of people in European football need to consider what might happen to investment from Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar if further military escalation around Yemen and Iran forces Gulf states to reconsider their strategic priorities
My basic view is that even post-29 (I) you remain a bad run of inflation away from another unhinged president (II) lots of stuff the US has retreated from will be low on the list to re-establish.
American Liberals and Leftists should not be surprised if America faces a lot of scepticism even after Trump is gone from Canadians, Europe and the rest of the world as long as Democrats and DSA preach norms of international law they refuse to implement towards their own country
1. These are reasonable points in this thread. 2. This thread overthinks the level of attention to detail that UK (or for that matter EU) voters will expend in debates and electoral campaigns that will be driven by the power of anecdotes, stories and raw emotion
🚨🚨 #brexit polling points to people thinking the #UK should have a closer relationship with the #EU. Fine but the problem with this type of polling (to also get some political imperative) is that the questions are too vaguely formulated. First, what is the meaning of a "closer relationship"?

Stephen Miller can only be sent to the Hague once the US Congress legislates for America to finally sign on to the Rome Statute and accept jurisdiction of the ICC Yet for all their talk of respecting international law, the US Democrats aren't interested and not even the DSA views it as a priority
Send Stephen Miller to The Hague.
