At the front of the room, the head of the history department started discussing the upcoming field trip the senior-level students would be taking to somewhere historical. Izzy assumed it was historical anyway. She stopped paying attention the second she realized it wasn’t relevant for her.
The theme to The Elephant Show popped into her head uninvited. Probably because, if she tilted her head, she could see an elephant in the chalk-dust Rorschach test across the history teacher’s brown sweater vest.
Even though it had been years since she’d heard the song, it had clearly taken up permanent residence in her hippocampus, waiting for its turn to come out and play.
She resisted the urge to hum, but the slight head bob was non-negotiable. At least if she was nodding, it would look like she was paying attention. That should be covered in Staff Meetings 103: Songs In Your Head to Stave Off Boredom and Fake Active Listening.

My bigger issue is I don't know what my spice level is. It's so subjective! What makes something "hot & steamy" vs "extra spicy"? Am I "medium" spice because they only get it on open-door-style once, or do I get notched up a level because it goes on for like 5 +pages? 🤷🏼‍♀️ (1/2)⬇️ #SumLuv

Jacqueline, Kenneth, and Shannon were crowded around a microphone, clapping along to a song. Shannon had been reluctant to join in the recording of anything, but Jacqueline and Kenneth both persuaded her that her participation was essential.
“It would sound better if we had more texture,” Kenneth had said.
Shannon wrinkled her nose, unsure what texture had to do with recording hand claps. But she had to admit she was having a lot of fun clapping along.
There were a few mistakes, but thankfully those were mostly Kenneth’s.
Shannon giggled as Jacqueline mocked Kenneth after his third blunder. She could tell by the glint in her eyes that Jacqueline wasn’t actually annoyed, and Kenneth’s response was equally unserious.
“This one keeps distracting me,” Kenneth said, nudging Shannon as he headed back to the control room to reset.

Yes. So, so many! Julie, Izzy (WIP 1) and Jacqueline (WIP 2) are musicians. They reference both contemporary (to the book) songs and their own songs. WIP1 has several significant songs running parallel with the romance, but none more important than "Unsaid" - the song Julie writes (1/5) #SumLuv

Cèilidh (WIP 3) has a cat named Ecker (after Margaret Ecker, the Canadian journalist). Ecker is friendly, but seems to really like Beverly, which makes Cèilidh scoff since they only dated for a hot second. Beverly refuses to call her Ecker though. She thinks the name ridiculous. #AwesomeCharacters

I don't think it'd be all that hard to switch WIP 1 to almost anything with enough edits. I could (but wouldn't) make it sci-fi. Julie & Izzy join together after being estranged, to fight the rise of AI-created music & inspire human creativity in a dystopian hellscape... sure, why not! #SumLuv

#LesFicFri 8/07 A day late, but was running errands all day yesterday. Gwen is not playing with her food. This is completely transactional, no enjoyment whatsoever. 😏

My search was short, a woman soon drew my eye. Tall and willowy with soft brown curls, she moved to the ritualistic noise coming out of the large black speakers with such sensual smoothness she appeared to be made of liquid. I felt I could nearly taste her already. I began my approach, trying not to appear too out of place in the sea of spasming bodies on the dance floor. My path was briefly obstructed by a tall form, the irritating Declan once again, but I navigated around him with ease.

I neared as the woman turned. Her brown eyes fell on me and her brow furrowed for a moment before her mouth shifted into a playful half smile. I affixed an inviting smile on my own lips as the woman reached out a bare, tattooed arm to grip my waist, moving me in time with her own rhythm. I allowed her to. We danced for a while, and the woman was free with her affections, letting her hand linger on my hip, or pressing her front up against my back as we moved.

‘I am not playing with my food,’ I told myself as I swayed, closing my eyes feeling the woman’s curls brushed against the nape of my neck.

#SapphicLineShare 8/07 I've shared it before, but I still like this scene between Gwen and Capt Hook...

I couldn't tear my gaze away from this woman. Our paths had diverged in more ways than I could ever comprehend, yet the underlying essence of our shared experiences remained frighteningly similar. I couldn't help but ponder the endless possibilities of what could have been. She could have been me. Or maybe I would have been her, growing up alongside the fierce crew of the Jolly Roger, fighting against Pan and his Lost Ones. If I hadn't undergone my transformation, would I have returned to England? Perhaps a life of normalcy with Archie by my side and a future full of children and grandchildren had always been nothing more than a wistful dream, regardless of the circumstances. CH and I, in our shared misfortune, were two lost souls, two girls who had been mercilessly stripped of their former lives.

Yet, in the midst of these revelations, I couldn't deny that the pirate stirred something else within me. I desired her. The fullness of her lips called out to me, the elegant curve of her throat beckoned, producing a scarcely remembered ache between my legs. But it went beyond mere attraction. My body yearned for her, craved her touch. It was as if I had become acutely aware of her scent, an intoxicating blend of the sea and exotic flowers. She smelled divine. Her heartbeat resonated with a tranquil rhythm, like that of someone at peace. Somewhere deep inside me, my own patchwork heart echoed her rhythm, my own unique song seeming to match up with hers.

See, the thing about me is I rarely stick to a subgenre. I'll write historical romance, contemporary romance, romcom, dark romance, romance x thriller/mystery etc... I don't like borders, limits, or rules really. Mix and match, blend genres, styles, whatever. It's more fun without rules! #SumLuv

Kenneth was curious how Jacqueline planned to handle the other instruments but didn’t dare ask. When Jacqueline unleashed her ire, it wasn’t explosive, like he was used to with other temperamental musicians. Hers was more understated and far more intimidating than he would have thought coming from the short, blond-haired folk singer.
Once the guitars were recorded, he got his answer. Jacqueline picked up the bass and recorded it in just two takes.
The first time they broached the topic of percussion, however, Kenneth gently tried to persuade Jacqueline of the merits of a professional drummer. The drums were tricky, and her studio time was limited he had warned her.
Jacqueline responded by taking a seat behind the kit, oozing with confidence. She picked up the sticks in traditional grip and flashed a knowing smirk to the bemused engineer. “Ready when you are, Ken.”

For the first time, Izzy understood what it was like to have a crush. The way people described it had never made sense before. She never understood the butterflies they talked about until Julie hugged her and her stomach did flips for days afterwards. She never understood getting lost in thoughts of someone until she started daydreaming about Julie. And she certainly never understood the physical pull attraction created, until she felt it whenever Julie was near.

“You had your pick of partners,” Stella said. “Why me?” She didn’t meet Liv’s eyes when she asked.
Liv’s soft, earnest smile returned. “I wanted to dance with you.”
“But why? You could dance with anyone—”

Despite what Pinga believed, Lusa knew the ones who wanted more, didn’t really. Not that Lusa believed they were faking attraction – they didn’t know what they were asking for. The real Lusa was all-consuming. The real Lusa would ruin them both.
But Kerr had seen a hint of it and kept looking. How absurd was that? How cruel that such a possibility existed here? Lusa took a deep breath, carefully, so as not to wake Kerr.

What would have happened if Kerr had wanted more, right there on the dance floor? Lusa knew immediately – she would have fallen like black spruce needles at the slightest breeze in winter. If Kerr had tried, she wouldn’t have protested. She would have let her take whatever she wanted.

I love most tropes, so long as they serve the plot or character development/don't feel forced. Make them feel like a natural extension of the plot. I love when tropes get subverted. F.ex. only one bed is fine, but what about "we still ended up in the same bed, despite 18 beds available." #SumLuv

I confess, I don't have a great grasp of the specific terms for romantic tropes (I know it when I see it lol) but, for better or worse, they are a good marketing tool. What about you? Do you love when There's Only One Bed? Not sure? Describe it! Maybe we can help you out #SumLuv
