So, l knew what l wanted to do with this edit but there was a skill issue…mine lol.

I tried for ages to find a suitable Google image of a simple easel, but I couldn’t get it to work.

But I know a Dan that can 😉

So, off to my step son and l asked him to use unity (after paying a beer tax of course) to drop a photorealistic easel into the first image and match all the lighting conditions.

Then he spouted gobbledygook about “global illumination, volumetric lighting and spectral highlighting?” and l had my base image.

I then took that new image into an app called Phonto and added the darker capture and with manipulation, l got the angle l needed without losing the quality for it to be positioned on the easel.

I then deleted the background image which left me with just the darker picture at the correct angle which l saved.

Then into Snapseed with the background image and the new darker one at the correct angle was added as a double exposure so l could get it to rest on the easel.

That new completed image was then taken to Lightroom for my usual finishing touches of a slight vignette and a white boarder frame.

This is a bit of a capstone. Milky Way edits (in my opinion) are very challenging to do well. Two exposures, one foreground and one sky and the goal is to create a believable image. You will have to use all of the editing skills or work you've put in, color, temperature, blending/layering, masking, luminosity blending, white balance matching, and local dodge-and-burn work. And some restraint.

Now it's your challenge and you do it your way, and if you want to put your skills to the challenge, then shoot for the believable photo--get the seam right, match the white balance, scale honestly, and avoid oversaturating the core or crushing the blacks. Game on.

As soon as l saw this amazing image l knew that l had to dip into my Sci-Fi knowledge with one of my most favourite stories from HG Wells “The War of the Worlds”.

Interestingly, the original book from 1898 is set in England and uses places l use to live as its backdrop so, it’s always sent shivers down my spine.

Process wise, l went onto Google images to find something appropriate for our alien invaders. Then l took Rock’s incredible original image and double exposed the Google image over the top of that in the brilliant Snapseed.

Then l exported that new image into Lightroom for IPad.

After a lot of head scratching, tweaking and messing about with masking, opacity levels, lighting and the like l got to my final image seen here.

I did a slight vignetting and finished with my usual white border frame.
