Photo taken by @rjrock.bsky.social & processed by me (brief process in alt) #ECK #EastCoastKin #PostProcess #Temperature Went autumnal with it. The dichotomy of such pictures intrigues me. Logically you know it was—likely—a chilly day, but the rich, orange tones make the entire frame feel warm.

A photo of a river running through a German forest, all the leaves, foliage, moss etc are various shades of autumnal oranges and yellows (after my tinkering in editing software). The original photo was taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and edited by me.

A fairly simple edit, made in Darktable.

I started by increasing the exposure a little in the Exposure module.

Then, in the Colour Calibration module, I changed the ‘adaption’ mode to ‘none (bypass)’, just to stop Darktable throwing up a bright red warning message on the module, then in the Blue Primary RGB channel I moved the blue slider towards yellow, eyeballing the amounts.

Then I activated the Colour Equaliser module, used the colour selector eyedropper to select any areas of green that I wanted to autumnify, and adjusted them until I liked the results.

Finally, I activated the Sigmoid module—I’m not too sure what it actually does (I once looked up how another module works and it was headache inducing, so haven’t bothered to look it up), but it seems to often make colours punchier.

#PostProcess Challenge: #Temperature Make temperature a deliberate, visible part of your edit of these serene scene from a German forest. Everything else is yours: crop, tone, contrast, texture. Take the temp and push it, split it, flip it, hold it, isolate it or anything else tinyurl.com/4c99jewm

Oct 19 - Oct 25 #Temperature

Change the color temperature of the image and let that change carry the result.

Temperature has to be a deliberate, visible part of your edit
Everything else is yours: crop, tone, contrast, texture. Black and white is fair game if temperature still drives it

Ways in (pick one or invent your own)

Push it: take the whole image warmer or cooler
Split it: warm highlights with cool shadows, or the reverse
Flip it: swap what’s warm and what’s cool
Hold it: pull everything toward neutral and see what’s left
Isolate it: change temperature in one area only

Photo taken by @rjrock.bsky.social & processed by me (brief process in alt) #ECK #EastCoastKin #PostProcess I said last time we did #Abstract how it’s a form I’ve always struggled with, and this time was no exception…

Abstract (hopefully?!) photo of the reflection of a building in a puddle. It’s a small part of a larger photo of a precinct like area, there’s a large building in the background with cars and people on a nearby road reflected in its windows, a lone man is standing near the building, and a large puddle in the foreground shows a reflection of the building. The original photo was taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and was processed by me.

The image was edited in Darktable…

I cropped the image. Playing around with the crop tool for quite some time, I initially thought about a square crop, focussing only on the puddle. But having changed the crop aspect ratio on a whim, I actually liked having a little bit of the dry ground in the image.

Then, not knowing how to process the image, I ran through my somewhat extensive list of unfinished WIP styles (Darktable’s name for presets), eventually landing on my WIP CineStill 800T, because I liked the colours it gave in the puddle—It's actually been a long time since I touched it. The last time I did, I got in a right mood with it because try as I might, I couldn’t make it work.

At the minute, the preset:

Activates the Split-Toning module, adding red to the highlights.

Activates the RGB Curve module, giving the green and blue channels a gentle s curve, and the red channel a slightly more s-like s curve.

Then it removes the haze in the Haze Removal module—the purpose of this in the styles intended use is to lessen the light spill from light sources, thereby hopefully keeping the red glow more apparent.

Finally, it adds a light grain—because it’s attempting to emulate film.

Rock @rjrock.bsky.social · last wk.

#Abstract is the theme. Take this image somewhere it no longer reads as what it was. It can look like something else entirely. Tell us where you started and stopped and why. Cross post to #abstractia if your edit matches their #gothic theme. #ECK #PostProcess #EastCoastKin tinyurl.com/4hvbwpa8

Take it somewhere it no longer reads as what it was. Abstract doesn’t mean it has to look like nothing. It can look like something else entirely: a map, a texture, a weather system, a fabric. It just can’t read as the original subject anymore.

THE TEST
Show it to someone who hasn’t seen the original. If they can’t say it’s a building and a plaza, you’re there.

WAYS IN
These are doors, not rules. Use one, mix several, or ignore them.

Crop to a fragment until scale is unreadable
Warp, mirror, rotate, or stretch it
Layer or repeat it
Strip it to tone, or limit it to a few colors
Remove the horizon, the edges, anything that says what it was
Push it until the detail turns into pattern

Photo taken by @rjrock.bsky.social & processed by me (brief process in alt). #ECK #EastCoastKin #PostProcess I struggled a bit with this one, much like last time we did #Silence

Black and white photo of Santa Cristina Gherdëina in Italy. The village appears silent, with nobody on the streets and no cars on the roads. The only signs of life are a few lights coming from buildings, and lights on the exterior of some buildings, the brightest of which illuminate the exterior of the Parish Church of Santa Cristina. The photo was taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and was processed by me.

The image was edited in Darktable…

I cropped the image to focus on a small portion of the village to eliminate parts of the village in which people could be seen (hopefully I’ve removed them all?!), to give the village a sense of silence.

Then I upped the exposure a little in the Exposure Module (only the tiniest smidge, so little the slider barely looked to have moved) to make as much of the village visible.

Then I activated the Colour Calibration module and converted the image to black and white, going against my usual norm and using the Fuji Acros 100 preset for once, because it gave, to my eye, the most pleasing results.

Then I activated the Denoise (profiled) module. Like the exposure module, I only moved the strength slider a smidge. The reason being two fold—if you go too far the image becomes soft, or even outright blurry, and—very much a personal preference thing, but—I don’t like all the noise to be digitally removed, to me images feel kinda soulless when that's done.

Rock @rjrock.bsky.social · 3w ago

#ECK #PostProcess #Silence This week's Post Process Challenge takes us to late sunset in St. Cristina, Italy from the side of a tight switchback. It's a noisy image with great potential for stillness. Your job is to find it. #EastCoastKin tinyurl.com/2w22cvdm

#ECK #PostProcess
Sep 28 - Oct 4 #Silence

This week's Post Process Challenge is silence. This image has a volume knob. Turn it down. Whatever the original register is, busy, loud, active, or chaotic, find the version that holds still. Silence isn't always soft. A hard-contrast image with a single point of light can be the most silent thing in the room. This is about stillness, not softness.

Photo taken by @rjrock.bsky.social & processed by me (brief process in alt) #ECK #EastCoastKin #PostProcess #Subtraction 1st image was my “proper” attempt. Other 2, my curiosity got me wondering what my—long time tinkering with—WIP ‘daytime glow’ & ‘evening glow’ styles (presets) would look like.

Black and white photo of a train approaching a train station platform. The train is on one of a number of tracks, next to it another train is passing. Beside the tracks, opposite the platform, are a number of industrial buildings. The photo was taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and was processed by me.

The image was edited in Darktable…

I upped the exposure a little in the Exposure module. But only a smidge. I didn’t want to lose the definition of the clouds and upping it more than a smidge blew out the sky.

Then I cropped the image - in all honesty, I did so by playing around with the crop box rather randomly (set to the original image’s aspect ratio) until I got an idea of a crop I liked.

I converted the image to black and white, using the HP5 preset on the Colour Calibration Module (it’s by far the easiest method to convert an image to black and white in Darktable, and it almost always does a good job).

Then I used the Colour Balance RGB module to make small adjustments to the contrast of the image.

I activated the Tone Equaliser module, setting it to ‘strong’.

Then I activated the Local Contrast module, leaving it at its default settings.

Finally, I activated the Filmic module, leaving it at its default settings.

The image was edited in Darktable using my ‘daytime glow’ style (preset)…

I manually upped the exposure a little in the Exposure Module. I only upped it a smidge as I didn’t want to lose the definition of the clouds and upping it more than a smidge blew out the sky.

Then I cropped the image - in all honesty, I did so by playing around with the crop box rather randomly (set to the original image’s aspect ratio) until I got an idea of a crop I liked.

Then I applied my ‘daytime glow’ style:

It activated the Colour Balance RGB module - I then went in and manually made small adjustments to things such as global chroma and saturation based on the image.

Then it activated the Colour Zones module, setting chroma and lightness to a fairly pleasing default - I then went in and made some small adjustments manually.

It then activates the Filmic module, with the settings set to default as that is almost always the best.

It activates the Local Contrast module, with the settings set to default as it’s usually sufficient.

Finally, it added a colour toned graduated density filter in the Graduated Density module - which I went into and made some minor adjustments based on the image.

Photo taken by @rjrock.bsky.social & processed by me (brief process in alt) #ECK #EastCoastKin #PostProcess #Texture

Black and white photo of a Moab desert landscape. In the distance a towering red-rock formation is framed by the remains of two long dead (at least they look that way) trees in the foreground. The photo was taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and was processed by me.

The image was edited in Darktable…

I cropped the image. Going rogue and using a portrait orientation. I did this to focus on the most textured part of the image, and to play a little with natural framing.

I upped the exposure a smidge in the—aptly named—Exposure Module.

Then I activated the Contrast Equaliser Module, initially running its clarity preset, and then tinkering with it, fine tuning it by eye.

I then activate a second instance of the Contrast Equaliser Module, running the sharpen preset, and tinkering with it to also fine tune its the results by eye.

Then I converted the image to black and white, using the HP5 preset on the Colour Calibration Module (by far the easiest method to convert an image to black and white in Darktable, and it almost always does a damn good job).

Finally, I activated the Colour Equaliser module, repositioned it so that it was before the black and white conversion in the pixelpipe (the order in which Darktable processed the modules) so it would alter the final image, and flung the sliders around for a bit, using them to in effect dodge and burn areas of the image.

Sorry for missing last week--had a long weekend in Moab and then post-labor day work craziness. This week's image is coming from Moab and the challenge is #Texture. Push it forward or pull it back. No destination is wrong--your call. #ECK #PostProcess #EastCoastKin tinyurl.com/mw97kpdy

Sep 14 - Sep 20 Texture

This week's Post Process Challenge is Texture. Destination: Moab. Everyone starts here — where you take it is up to you.

Push it forward or pull it back. Sharpen it into something you can almost feel, or smooth it into something that barely holds a surface at all. No destination in mind — just pick a direction and follow it.

Curious to see how far apart everyone lands in a scene like this.
