discord casually admitting they know that nobody wanted the age verification implemented and trying to be funny about it is seriously something that the pr team should reflect on and really study when they lose a lot of nitro subs in this next week

"They're not misunderstanding the film; they're co-opting a message"

Screencap from the interview linked in the quoted post

Marlow Stern (the interviewer): You have one of the most renowned replies in Twitter history. Elon Musk tweeted out, “Take the red pill,” then Ivanka Trump enthusiastically wrote, “Taken!” to him, and then you replied, “Fuck both of you.” I’m curious how you feel about the co-opting of “The Matrix” by those on the right who don’t really seem to understand its messaging.

Lilly Wachowski: I mean, I can’t sit in a room and explain the movie to every single person who watches it. Even if I did sit in a room with Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump — yikes — it doesn’t matter. They’re not misunderstanding the film; they’re co-opting a message. And that’s what fascists do: They co-opt the messages of progressives and use it to their benefit to confuse and obfuscate what is going on and the intention of their ideology. They do it with everything. They do it with Martin Luther King Jr. Look at how they’ve changed the idea of what antisemitism is.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: an emo teenager is sitting with his family at a table in a casual restaurant. While his parents chat, he looks at another table solemnly. There is a dark aura emanating off him. Panel 2: a similar scene across the restaurant- an emo girl with her family; her little brother is absolutely housing a cheeseburger. She stares back at the guy across the restaurant, while also emitting a dark aura. Panel 3: the two teenagers eyes are locked on each other. In a shared thought bubble, which drowns out all the surrounding ambience, they imagine themselves as anthropomorphic wolves, embracing while they ride a motorcycle down a dark and lonely road through the black of night.

Techbros seem to love Tolkien, so here's an analogy to help you understand what genAl is.
GenAl is The One Ring. You think your use is justified, b/c you don't have evil in your heart.
But it came from evil, it is intended for evil purpose, & anything you do with it will be twisted to that end.

Not just that but Tolkien also said, "Evil cannot create anything new, it can only corrupt and ruin what good forces have invented or made."
Sound familiar?

Just now
The analogy of the One Ring for GenAl is quite powerful, especially when you consider how it seduces users with the promise of easy power. That quote about evil being unable to create anything new feels particularly relevant to the way these models remix existing human art. It really makes you wonder if we're trading our creative soul for a shortcut.

I keep seeing people thinking this is a bluesky problem. If you're seeing this it thinks you're in a state or country with age verification laws. This is what every social media site will do if KOSA and the KIDS Act succeeds. Running to another socmed won't fix it, we have to fight the source.

🌈 Day 28 🌈 The anniversary of Stonewall Never forget, and never go back

Never forget that the first pride was a riot against police brutality led by black and queer trans people.

Fun history facts: One of the 31 people arrested at Stonewall on June 28th 1969 was American folk singer Dave Van Ronk, who was not at the Stonewall Inn at the time and was cis & straight as far as I'm aware. He'd been eating dinner at a nearby restaurant when he noticed a riot happening, said "Well I suppose I should go see what the fuss is about," stepped outside, and immediately started throwing bricks at the cops.

van ronk is quoted as saying about the riots: "as far as I was concerned, anybody who'd stand against the cops was all right with me."
