On the recommendation of @bleakhousing.bsky.social (I think?) and definitely @deathsentencepod.bsky.social, and because of my aforementioned Weird City fetish, I read The Works of Vermin by @hironennes.bsky.social. It's beautiful, gross, queer, scary, sad, and has BUGS.

Up next by the way is Zelazny's The Mask of Loki and then maybe something more literary. Taking suggestions if you're so inclined.
"raw" is 1000% the right adjective for this book

it's been great in recent years to see new venues like Ancillary Review of Books, Typebar &c. appearing to uphold this whole sphere of discourse (there have been periods where at least to me it felt like it was Strange Horizons carrying the torch on their own)
Haven't listened to the show before, but really enjoyed this episode, I'll be sure to look for a copy of the Nonexistent Knight now
Eden and Langdon return to disparage Francis Fukuyama (and mispronounce his name, sorry) before moving to lauding Calvino's cheeky, sharply constructed The Nonexistent Knight! They explore questions of historical reception, "herohood", identity, and (post)modernism. soundcloud.com/death-senten...

We're thrilled to present the shortlist for the 2026 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction:
This is one of the best episodes we've ever done about one of the best books we've ever read. I could read The Vivisectors ten more times and speak about it forever.

I like what Jared said here but I think I fundamentally disagree with the overall Bluesky consensus that art is inherently anti-right wing. This might get me crucified, but as I discussed on @deathsentencepod.bsky.social recently, we are fools if we think the left has a monopoly on aesthetics.
The problem is that “I am often scared and angry about social change” does not inherently lend itself to interesting art. You can be as technically skilled as the greats, but art with nothing interesting to say is just a commodity.
