"To understand how the far right has taken root here, it helps to consider changing features of Brazilian capitalism over the past two decades. Since turn of century, China’s reordering of global capitalism has pushed S America to become one of the world’s main sources for ag & mineral commodities"

Rise of agri-Bolsonarismo: "The ethnographer Caio Pompeia has shown how radicalized farmers and ranchers entered state-level producer associations, coordinating their efforts across the country until they were powerful enough to shape the large agrarian caucus in Congress, pushing it to the right"

Work is ongoing to get University of Edinburgh to #StopTheCuts, save staff and programmes and get all the contributions and services the good workers of Edinburgh University make to their own institution and far beyond, back up and running. Until then, support the strikes ✊🏻

I've been threading together a few lines of thought together regarding situated practices and the wider sociopolitical contexts in which practices occur. I keep stumbling into the absurdity of the wider lenses. I'm increasingly leaning towards seeing the 'atavars of ideology' as expanding barriers.

The contradictions within institutions point to the problems we face. For example, supporting community-led OA publishing is good, AND closing down the faculties etc. is bad. This also helps us to identify that institutions are not allies. People are. People. Not institutions.

That’s both Leicester and Nottingham closing down languages then, after Lincoln closed theirs in 2024.

Second week on strike with UCU Edinburgh. We will be on strike for five weeks - taking out the entire first half of term, up to the first assessments - but we could be back in the classroom tomorrow if management withdrew the threat of compulsory redundancies.

ffs I just read a European job ad that explicitly requires TWO PUBLISHED MONOGRAPHS for an asst prof position. yes, yes, I knew it was like this but it's truly startling to see TWO required. it's official: unis have zero respect for books & the ppl who write & publish them. Nothing affirms it more.

So not about the AI video, but generally: You cannot return to the past *definitionally* and you especially cannot learn from it if you hold it up like white supremacist Americans hold up the 1950s. Time's arrow moves one way: learning from the past requires understanding it, not worshipping it.
