ERC project DISINTEGRATION

@disintegrationerc.bsky.social

ERC-funded research project on "The Mass Politics of Disintegration" (DISINTEGRATION), run by @stefwalter.bsky.social and hosted at @ipz.bsky.social, explores responses to international cooperation challenges. More info: www.disintegration.ch

I am very much looking forward to chairing the panel on "Responding to Non-Cooperation in International Relations" at #EPSS2026! Together with an excellent group of colleagues, we will discuss a research agenda for studying responses to non-cooperation in #InternationalRelations! Join us! #Polisky

DISINTEGRATION research at #EPSS2026! * How do political parties speak about IOs? by @tommccraehunter.bsky.social & @stefwalter.bsky.social * A theoretical framework on how to think about responses to non-cooperation in intl. politics by @lisadellmuth.bsky.social & @stefwalter.bsky.social

Non-cooperation is a regular feature of international politics, but research on its various forms is fragmented across IR subfields. Our agenda-setting panel proposes and discusses a more unified framework for studying how actors respond to non-cooperation. Overview paper: shorturl.at/HbIvU

First conference day at #EPSS2026. Very much looking forward to learning about new research, inspiration for next steps, and seeing colleagues and friends. I am particularly excited about these two panels:

Back home after an eventful weekend - I am proud of what we have created (even if we had hoped to arrive at a more consensual way forward). Our work in the EPSA reform working group has been intense. Still, doing this with such an engaged, friendly & creative group has been a privilege and treat.

DISINTEGRATION publ #9 @giorgiomalet.bsky.social and @stefwalter.bsky.social show key events in UK Brexit politics affected EU attitudes in other countries: foreign events can influence voters’ attitudes in other countries and events like Brexit have systemic consequences! doi.org/10.1177/1465...

Much of my research in the last six years has revolved around the @disintegrationerc.bsky.social project. I am so proud of my team and all we have achieved, and grateful to the @erc.europa.eu for making this possible. If you want to know what we did, this thread is for you:

Congratulations to the DISINTEGRATION team! And because our world still remains mostly integrated, it is fitting that in several hours, Cornell students taking Introduction to Comparative Politics with me will be discussing some of its outputs (with this "feature slide" of today's assigned author)

The globalization backlash manifests itself in electoral successes of globalization-skeptic parties; in a more negative tone in partisan discourse about globalization; and in an increase in policies designed to stop or curtail economic, political, and/or sociocultural globalization. However, contrary to the popular narrative, the globalization backlash is not driven by a large swing in public opinion against globalization. Rather, existing antiglobalization attitudes have been politicized and become more politically consequential.

Great thread on an important, ambitious research project led by the brilliant @stefwalter.bsky.social - with insights and findings that are more relevant than ever given the challenges facing all major international organisations 👇

Seeing all the current and former DISINTEGRATION team members again was wonderful. It makes me so happy and proud to hear about their learnings from the project and their exciting plans going forward. What a great group, and a lasting legacy of the DISINTEGRATION project!

What a pleasure to reflect on the learnings, achievements and ways forward from the DISINTEGRATION project with former and current team members and our wonderful advisory board at Kloster Fischingen. Great presentations, a quiz, beer tasting and many ideas for next steps.

Graph of the month: As the DISINTEGRATION project enters its final month, here is its core theoretical contribution: A framework that predicts that the relative size of cooperation gains at risk and contagion risks shape the extent to which states accommodate non-cooperation by others or not.
