The Impact of Chirality on Singlet Fission and Triplet Fusion: A Molecular Twist for Photon Management
Chirality has recently emerged as a new means to profoundly impact the properties of organic semiconductors for spin-optoelectronic applications. Yet, a clear mechanistic understanding of chiral structure–property relationships remains absent to date, particularly for photon interconversion processes such as singlet exciton fission and triplet fusion. In this perspective, we highlight recent work that investigates chiral structures for these processes. We discuss the various ways in which chirality can impact such conversion processes and suggest ways to leverage it to improve photon management for both energy applications and quantum information science.

Dr Monique Ryan@mon4kooyong.bsky.social · 8mo agoWhen student loan repayments bring in over three times more revenue than the petroleum resources rent tax (PRRT), it’s clear the system is broken. I welcome the govt’s 20% HECS cut, but there’s much more to do. Degrees are still too expensive, and this cut doesn’t help students starting this year.

Singlet Fission c-Si Solar Cells: Beyond Tetracene
Singlet fission photovoltaics enable the extraction of two electron–hole pairs from each higher-energy photon while leveraging a mature technology such as crystalline silicon (c-Si) as the underlying cell. Significant steps have been made in the development of singlet fission silicon photovoltaics, but all examples reported to date use tetracene as the singlet fission material. Tetracene is photochemically unstable and therefore unsuitable for commercial applications. Here we demonstrate singlet fission-derived triplet exciton transfer to c-Si from photochemically stable dipyrrolonaphthyridinedione (DPND) derivatives, with a thin layer of tin oxide as the passivation layer. An overlayer of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) was found to improve interface passivation further. These observations demonstrate that singlet fission photovoltaic devices can be made using stable and commercially viable materials.

Rare for me to be in the office on a Sunday but I had the opportunity to present our recent work on SF at Soochow University.
Had a good time at @unswchemistry.bsky.social Christmas party last night. Hosted at the original site of the School! @schmidtim.bsky.social gave an excellent history lesson on over 100 years of chemistry at UNSW. The School began in 1879 and predates the establishment of Australia (1901).
Alright since a critical mass of photochemists officially joined it was about time to try and make a photochemistry/spectroscopy starter pack; hopefully this is a good start, feel free to reach out to be added! #chemsky go.bsky.app/Cyibs8f
