Part of resisting fascism is resisting the normalization of cruelty and lack of empathy. We are surrounded by horrific cruelty and tragedy. We can’t normalize it. We can’t blame victims without losing our own humanity.

It is truly upsetting that a senior scholar in classics, with the protections and stature of tenure, would openly gloat about the US denying visas to people (often nontenured) due to their political views. Maybe the worst thing I've ever seen on the Classics listserv, and that's saying something.

This includes #classics, by the way. I spent a year at Indiana as a VAP - it was a wonderfully supportive place for me and all the classes I taught were highly enrolled. This is a tragedy.

I had forgotten that the postdoc I did at the very start of my career was NEH funded. It’s been canceled. It funded people to write articles on Latin words, in Latin. Lexicography is very woke. 😞
