Big announcement: The final project of my thesis work, Skeleton: Visual Authoring of Non-visual Data Experiences, has now been accepted for publication at IEEE VIS! 🎉 🎉 🎉
Announcing: Skeleton 🩻, the culminating project of my PhD!
My final research project looked at the barriers that sighted practitioners face when authoring non-visual data experiences. We co-designed, built tooling, built a UI prototype, and ran a study.

This idiot has probably never been to the BOREAL FOREST a day in his life. It is 5.5 times the size of Texas. You cannot "groom" it. It's burning because of climate change. The utter bullshit from these climate deniers. Canadians are sick of this bullying and they are not going to take it.
Rep. Jeff Van Drew: "Canada isn't working because they are so far left. This should be a warning shot to them. You better come to America, say, 'We're sorry, we're gonna mend our ways and do what we used to do and groom and maintain the forest.'"
When using Microsoft Word or Google Docs, don't just make text bigger and bolder to make it a heading. That will work for sighted users, but screen reader users will miss that and just hear it as normal paragraph text. Use actual heading styles, like level 1 through 6.
It’s noon and the sky is yellow in Pittsburgh. Wildfires are here.

When reality surpasses fiction! Top: fictional forecast for August 2050, broadcast by French TV in 2014 to warn about the consequences of global warming. Bottom: Real French forecast for yesterday, June 22, 2026.
Oha, das klingt aber nicht gut. Hoffentlich wird das schnell wieder ganz.

If every billionaire is a policy failure, a trillionaire is 1000 policy failures in a trenchcoat.
Had the weirdest subversion of expectations today. I’m biking 🚲 in the middle of a narrow road when the car behind me honks. I stop and am prepared to be told off by a jagoff driver… but it was a lovely old Pittsburgh lady who wanted to know what shoes and helmet to get for her friend’s son.
Played this game a bunch tonight at Like Like and had a blast including with the bumping into people.
I implemented the most important feature of a GTA-like game: BUMPING INTO PEDESTRIANS
A colleague raised their feeling of Deep Blue (simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/15/...) about visualization libraries: what's the place for visualization libraries like @vega-vis.bsky.social when frontier models can write SQL and D3 directly?

Being in Brazil for ICLR now and learning a wild geography fact. Brazil is so huge that the northernmost point is closer to Canada than to the southernmost point of Brazil.
I’m at #iclr2026 this week. Come and say hi to chat about interpretability, visualization, interactive systems, human computer interaction, or anything else you are passionate about.
I’ll be at @chi.acm.org and @iclr-conf.bsky.social this year. Come and say hi if you’re there! Happy to talk about HCI, AI, visualization, interpretability, and interactive systems.

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again. #Pinks #ProudBlue
