I’m carrying an unreasonable number of laptops for a vacation. What’s that number?

fellow music players: do you find yourself having very different mechanical skills seemingly at random? I'm having a good fingers day, and those are as surprising as the bad days I also have. It's strange; I don't think my software-making brain is like this
Roxette made better music than 90% of the music that charted while they were active. Rush makes amazing music but merely solid albums. 2112 is the prototype rather than the counterexample. Jam band players are better musicians than classical virtuosos I can keep going
Post your hottest music take. Mine is New Order is better than Joy Division.
BREAKING: Google has rolled back its tool less than a day after it launched. Updated story coming soon.
I really think the solution has to be open source but not open contributor projects. A small barrier to being allowed to open a PR goes a long way.
So there's a thing happening on open-source repos: people who are otherwise uninterested in your project but want to obtain clout will file mediocre PRs against your repo anyway. So: community tarpits? Create a legit-looking repo with a bunch of open issues, wait for PRs, blacklist those accounts

Of course the day has to end with me smashing my phone. Universe, will you kindly go fuck your self
“This too is anxiety” etc etc Reminds me of the line I hear from many many musicians: “oh, you never get over stage fright. At some point you choose to put on the grownup costume and do your best”
that said, that’s just the risk you absorb when you are willing to take a big swing, and it’s refreshing to see someone not shy away from it
right, i mean, the process of aging is of every individual human becoming outmoded, so if you had been using your career to get out of remembering that, i can see how it would smack right in the face
My department is hiring tenure-track in computer science! Deadline: Oct 1, 2026. We care about and support both research and teaching. We're located in the suburbs of Philadelphia. It's a great place to work and live! I'm happy to answer any questions. www.haverford.edu/provost/news...

Netflix has now truly mastered the craft of "exactly as good as it needs to be to make the median Netflix focus grouper enjoy it"? _One_ reasonably famous actor, _one_ cross-cutting current society issue, and _one_ joke as risky as Churchill's Martinis have vermouth it's bleak
I happen to believe this, and it’s one of my lowest opinions of people writ large. I’m not proud to believe it, I take no pleasure in believing it, but I am front row to witness money move around in ways which accommodate this fact and I can’t deny it.
I am begging you to talk to other human beings directly, and not through a Claude layer. This goes doubly when I ask you, directly, to talk to me not through a Claude layer. Please.
I must have thought about this very blog post at least once a week this year. That included today, a few hours before seeing the skeet
Exactly. bactra.org/weblog/699.h...
Y’all should know @cderv.bsky.social has been on an absolute tear over at Quarto 1, while we work hard at Rust and collaborative writer work ahead of Quarto 2, quarto hub, and posit::conf I can’t avoid software engineering being weird in 2026, but I’m legit so proud of our work!
Quarto 1.10 shipped Friday. The highlights page lists one feature. The changelog lists 74. Mostly preview friction: stale pages, _brand.yml ignored until restart, format: changes needing two renders. If you work in Positron, that's your whole day. A boring release. Best kind.

The only real measure of a successful walk: that face right there
This one requires you to be from Brazil and due for a colonoscopy screening, but: “Carlos downloaded a virus from the internet”, thanks IBM ig
here are some commercials from my youth that have permanently etched themselves in my brain. feel free to QT or repy with your own faves. this one ran during my saturday morning cartoons and i think ended up on a vhs of transformers the movie or the duck tales movie www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVzZ...
(not a complaint here, but!) It is a pretty weird bsky thing that someone can quote-skeet you in a way that you cannot reply directly to them. I think this is the first I see it directly. (six digits if you're lucky. Often you're behind a code send to your email, and a code to read your email)
That’s all academia is, man. Just entering six digit codes faster than your colleagues down the hall until you get tenure. Impact factors and teaching evaluations were so 2009.
I just wound down my use of the Hey-dot-com email service over the white nationalist bulls**t of its proprietor, David Heinemeier Hansson (aka 'DHH'). Ditching a platform over flagrant racism: it shouldn't feel tough to do, even if it means disrupting one's precious social graph. I've done it twice!
And just from a dad’s perspective, it seems to me one of the explicit aims here is to make black girls feel like they are ugly. Like why else are you angry about a black little mermaid. And yes I take that shit personal.
Veritasium *click* don't recommend channel again *click* ok good
Omg I happen to live in Minneapolis and my next door neighbors are Argentinian. I genuinely want to put this on a t shirt lmao
No joke: what fraction of everyone's screen time is spend just refreshing logins? It has to be more than 10%, right? What complete embarrassment for the tech industry. Entirely seriously, this should be enough to get everyone laughed out of the room.
Ok so I was 45 and not 7 when I heard about this the first time lol. but this is genuinely cute, and no less because the “visual proof by induction” and the proof that (2^n)^2 - 1 = 0 (mod 3) are the same proof that you can work out easily in your head out on an evening walk
George Gopen's The Sense of Structure, though I'm almost a bit afraid to let the secret out. It is pound for pound the most expensive book I own, and would be a bargain at thrice the price.
What's your favorite book that you think the fewest of your followers have read? I think mine is probably A Sand County Almanac.
lmao, reddit put old.reddit.com behind a login gate? cool, bye assholes
