The world’s scientists breathed a sigh of relief this week as temperatures in the UK dropped below 35 degrees, meaning that everything is fine and we can go back to burning fossil fuels forever without any worries. From the Private Eye archive. Issue 1682, August 2026.

@clivejonesmp.bsky.social - I hoe that you will be able to support this bill again to give the terminally ill the ability to choose a dignified death.

"MPs: turn up tomorrow and use your vote. Refuse to allow a handful of unelected Lords to block a bill passed by the Commons and supported for years by 75% of the public." @pollytoynbee.bsky.social makes an impassioned plea to MPs - do the right thing and vote for compassionate choice.

July 2026 was the driest for England and Wales since records began 190 years ago. It was also the UK's sunniest July on record. For England and Wales, it was the sunniest calendar month ever observed. My solar panels would agree. #ClimateChangeIsReal #ClimateCrisis www.bbc.co.uk/weather/arti...

UK weather: Driest July on record for England and Wales

The month of July has been exceptionally dry, warm and sunny for most of the UK as Tomasz Schafernaker explains.

Great example of how expanding residential #solar + #storage is leading to falling #electricity prices for all consumers & reduced peak summer power demands. “Solar ate coal’s lunch and now batteries are eating gas’s dinner.” #RenewableEnergy www.ft.com/content/af10...

Australians ‘going gangbusters’ on Chinese batteries in renewable energy shift

Clean energy, backed by storage, now makes up about half of the country’s energy supply

@meghbaynes.bsky.social - you’ve yet to post here so I guess you probably won’t see this but your @thetimes.com article on eco homes was totally misleading - see below. I had thought journalistic standards were higher at The Times (recent exposé of farage corruption), but this just doesn’t cut it.

Simon Evans@drsimevans.carbonbrief.org · 3mo ago

FACTCHECK: A guide to manufacturing headlines, by the Times 1) highlight upfront costs of an “eco” home (EV, heat pump, solar) 2) pretend that petrol cars and gas boilers are free (yes really) 3) count upfront “eco” costs twice, for good measure 4) that’s it!

"I wouldn't wish that on anyone." Poppy's mum was denied choice and suffered at the end of life, despite access to great palliative care.  Dying people deserve compassion. MPs must uphold their democratic commitment to them - and us all - and back the assisted dying bill.

Global ocean temperatures hit a record high for June, according to the latest Copernicus Climate Change Service & Copernicus Marine Service data. Over the past three years, oceans outside the polar regions have been 0.35–0.73°C warmer than average. El Niño pushed June to a new record.

Just one possible outcome... but the GFS weather forecast model is suggesting 40-41°C is possible in the UK around 7th July. This is a long-range forecast with significant uncertainty, but the fact that we are even seeing such values fairly regularly in the forecasts is extraordinary.

“The president…began making vandalism claims over the weekend, after problems at the reflecting pool appeared to be getting worse, with visible tears in the pool’s new flooring and algae blooming despite cleanup efforts.” Think I know where the vandal lives. www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

Trump Administration Steps Up Law Enforcement Presence at Reflecting Pool

The president alleged that vandals damaged the pool, but the administration has provided little evidence to support the claim.

The UK summer of 1976 was an extraordinary heatwave for its time. On the 50th anniversary, we look back to learn about what that event can tell us today. For those who experienced the heatwave it is engrained in the memory, but it gives us a stark warning about future extreme heat for the UK.
