Thanks for the initial post by @doomhamwx.bsky.social on the EarthCARE direct overpass of #TyphoonSinlaku on 13 April 2026. I really enjoyed learning about the instrument and doing some brief analysis of this plot. The caveat being I think this is only the 2nd such image I have seen of a TC. đ

EarthCARE overpass of deep convection with overshooting tops over southern China on May 4. Cloud top heights reached ~16 km, with corresponding min brightness temp of -86°C observed by the MSI instrument (500-m spatial res).
The lowest pressure recorded by this buoy in Cyclone #Alfred was 961.1 mb at 18Z, which seems to be inside or near the edge of the eye.
Doubtful of JTWC's 12Z intensity estimate (115 kt, 943 mb) for TC #Alfred. Drifting buoy "5601640" in the eyewall only recorded 967 mb MSLP at 11Z (967.2 mb at 10Z; possibly briefly entered the eye). Moreover, SAR pass at ~08Z only found 90 kt, & structure has degraded thereafter!

EarthCARE scanned into Cyclone #Rae in the South Pacific earlier today, February 24, as it affected Fiji.
