Had a wonderful time at @anthro.irish this weekend just gone, wonderful convention at the southern tip of Ireland. I was immensely privileged to be asked to launch and host the first ever Irish fursuit dance competition which was an absolute blast and really well received by the attendees.

Okay so.

I have had some medical developments over the past several weeks, and now that I know more about the shape of them all I felt it was time to make an announcement to bring everyone up to speed.

I’ve had epilepsy for the last eight years, following an incident that was diagnosed at the time as a stroke. After recent re-imaging of my brain and analysis by a new team of neuroscientists in Oxford, It’s been determined that I have a brain tumour and that it’s what’s been causing the epilepsy all along rather than a stroke. It’s been quietly ticking away all this time, but on the plus side, growing only very slowly and my symptoms (regular mild seizures) have remained very stable over all this time.

I recently spent a few days in the hospital having surgery to conduct a biopsy in order to gather the best information possible on the tumour. The procedure all went to plan and I was discharged after a few days, but checked back in to my local hospital’s emergency department after a couple more due to an uptick in seizures owing to the surgery’s disturbance. They kept me for a couple days while they made some adjustments to my medications to help me through the recovery from the surgery, and that sorted things out just fine.

Today I’ve just met with the specialist team in Oxford about the biopsy results and had the little blue patch covering the surgical wound removed (see attached drawing). Their analysis has determined that my tumour is an 'oligodendroglioma' in type (which is less common but easier to directly target with modern treatment, which is good) and grade 2 (which is the slowest growing of the options, which is also good). In a couple weeks there will be additional results from genetic biomarker testing that will guide my treatment pathway going forward, and I'll be referred to oncology which will take over my care and treatment. The expectation is that this will involve a mix of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, as the tumour is in too delicate an area of my brain for surgical removal to be an option, but the prognosis is good. Essentially, this will be treated more like an ongoing chronic condition than like a cancer in the traditional sense, and an 'expected lifespan' prognosis isn't appropriate or relevant. My health is good and treatment will mainly focus on reducing the tumour's growth which is already quite slow, and managing my seizures. For this type of tumour it sounds like the chemo approaches are quite refined and targeted, and always improving with new research.

I fully appreciate that all of this must sound rather scary and big. And it is, in its way. But with the biopsy results today, the news has been pretty much the best case scenario possible. I am about as pleased and relieved as it's possible to be with the news, so I hope that you can join me in taking heart from this despite the frightening elements of it all, my dear friends. :)

Maybe a 🧊 take. I see way too many furries, new and old, just... expecting other people to put in all the effort. They'll spend more time complaining that there's no events, they have no friends, or have no fun at cons, than actually doing those things for themselves. Furry is what you make it!

The thing about Denethor is that he not only succumbed to despair, he wanted to ensure that Faramir succumbed with him. Similarly, a lot of people now are not only succumbing to despair, they're actively proselytizing despair, trying to convince others to join them in their hopelessness. Despair is apparently lonely and they want company in their self-immolation.

btw denethor succumbed to despair bc he was doomscrolling on the palantir. Sauron tweaked his algorithm so he only saw bad news, and he fell into the trap of thinking the world couldn't be saved.
