the speed improvements from gentoo with a custom kernel are genuinely silly a lot of it is more perceptual, like the gpu firmware being in-kernel so it loads faster on boot, but it also does feel kinda tangibly faster in-use
always fun having a gpu so old that when i get an error about hardware decoding i automatically assume it's just because the card is too old to support h.265 (it's not i just forgot to set USE=vaapi)
