one thing that i found both enchanting and upsetting was becoming old enough (i.e. reaching the age of approximately 18) to learn that pre-scriptural religion does not tend to be codified and as such contains a lot of crap like this where a particular belief exists only in a particular area/time

fwiw while my opinion doesn't mean much i agree /and/ disagree with both kukliansky and katz's takes. it's probably not reasonable to expect there to be two active synagogues in the city with how small the community is now, but i do think it should be rebuilt!

i do think you could make a weird metaphysical argument for the idea that the pop culture of certain countries is informed by their youth's desire to sublimate and not think about the evil things the country does but the thing is... this is kind of normal

you cannot fix a society where 30% of people are born again fascists by wording legislation correctly, by limiting the powers of this institution or that. i don't know what can fix these problems but i don't think it is possible to insure yourself from organised political will of tons of bad people

i wish i still believed in the frankly imo dubious idea that how healthy a civil society is depends entirely on institutional design

because i am not "american," i do not believe in the idea that society cannot legislate certain forms of speech as illegal, that seems like a dumb idea to me

Also this is beside the point for anything but actually ethnic minorities being "statistically" overrepresented in politics or culture is generally good. As more vulnerable populations, they need more representation than those who have nothing to complain about.
