Got our ground source heat pumps up and running yesterday. Operating at a paltry ~650% efficiency! PS we had two installed (and are 3-phase).

It now has the range of a premium new EV - no extra space required, such is the rate of battery tech improvement, and the old battery will be installed in my house, to allow all my power to come from solar or cheap and cleaner night electricity

Very excited to be releasing this open-source dataset for use by power planners and modelers, alike. This will fill a gap in data needs for long term planning and resource adequacy studies!
Very well organized discussion of FERC's upcoming regional transmission planning rule. Highly recommend! Bottom line: Most utilities/RTOs are not planning transmission for the future, so FERC's rule must try to force them to do it. But can FERC force utilities to actually plan transmission?
David Roberts@volts.wtf · 3y agoOn Volts: the US desperately needs more transmission lines to meet its climate goals. One of the most important federal reforms in years is approaching as FERC finalizes a new rule on transmission planning. I dig into the details with transmission guru Rob Gramlich.
If we had started reducing emissions in 2000 the world would have had a gentle slope downward to limit warming to well-below 2C. 23 years later we face a steep decent to limit warming to 2C, and a near-cliff to achieve 1.5C without substantial net-negative global emissions.
