There really is no football team I find quite as disgusting in their attitude and behavior as Argentina's national team and which I enjoy seeing lose more.

I am so happy Paraguay got eliminated. South American men seem to be too emotional to play.
I can retire now.
I was today years old when I googled the etymology out of interest and learned that it comes from the Middle English for „feather“ and that little fledgling birds are thus naturally not fully fledged. Learned something!
I was today’s years old when I learned that it’s actually *fully-fledged* and not, wait for it, fully-fleshed 😳 🫣😂🤷♀️

As a late antique historian, hearing/seeing „dominate“ still being bandied about as if it were an even slightly useful term is…exhausting.

Always excited when new work on the Great Palace comes out - this is based, as far as I can see, on an extensive (Spanish) PhD the author submitted in Madrid in 2023. www.cambridge.org/core/element...

I don‘t think „history“ can help us much to understand or navigate the current situation; on the other hand: the current situation very much can help to understand history. I‘m never reading Suetonius or Tacitus in the same light again as I did pre-2016.
One not inconsiderable annoyance of the current batshit political situation is the glut of hastily written „Why this is actually like Roman/Greek/Persian/Mongol imperialism and what history can teach us“ opinion pieces. History teaches us nothing; we refuse to learn.
Least surprising headline ever - and with that: a happy new year all round.
Arguing about the merits of a filmed retelling (!) of a work of fiction that has gone through multiple retellings already, based mostly on "accuracy" of armour and ships in screenshots and a trailer, is high up there among the things that makes me dislike my profession.
If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you. wset.com/news/nation-...
