Internet fandom has an enormous problem with "product = identity = totally above criticism", but I cannot think of a single subculture with thinner skin than TTRPG people. I'm pretty guilty of contributing to it myself, but it really seems like you truly cannot criticize a TTRPG without being Seen.

"Letting your players" is an expression aimed at killing my #ttrpg soul. I don't own any players, I just host games sometimes. Hopefully, I'm a player too. Nobody I play with requires my permission for anything, wtf is that. 2026 and we're still stuck playing "mother may I".

Something I love about TTRPGs is that once you have even the simplest (potentially free) ruleset and some dice, you can literally play the same game forever. No-one can monetise it or take it away. You can hack it and mod it and write your own content for it so it keeps feeling fresh.

The nice things about books: once you own them, you own them, forever. No one will be eye tracking your reading habits. No one will make money of you reading the book as many times as you'd like. And the very same book can be read by generations to come. It can last centuries, literally. It's great.

At least half of the #ttrpg hobby is simply being cagey about getting someone to run a campaign for you.
