Academia never recovered from COVID. We supported students, ignoring our needs. We tried to function as the US descended into fascism. Now, US education is being dismantled. Whatever comes for us here in NJ, this is EXACTLY what Americans voted for - preferring hate over a thriving society for all.
Nothing like trying to keep my focus on work knowing that 22 faculty and staff, right now, are awaiting emails to let them know they’ve been laid off. This will include senior, tenured faculty, as well. Devestated does not even describe how I’m feeling.
So, the problem with “meeting students where they are at” is that many don’t have a reciprocal view of responsibility. I was asked by students in an online synchronous class if I wouldn’t mind meeting on campus since some preferred the in-person interaction. 1/X
Whelp, no vaccines for me, because tomorrow I’m 50, not today, & since shingles always asks how old you are before it attacks, I’m safe for another 24 hours. Phew! I am relieved the virus is smart. It’s not like I scheduled my day around getting shots because it is a weekend & I am a working adult.
Just made my vaccination appointment for Sunday…this will be me strolling up to Walgreens. Because science.

DHS is now arguing that we cannot even put the names of ICE officers in our lawsuit against those officers. Their position is that, if a defendant works for DHS, they cannot be named in a lawsuit. Never seen anything like it.
You would think - and, who am I but a lowly security studies scholar - that this would be “How Not to Radicalize 101,” but, you know…toxic masculinity and all that jazz.

The inherent feeling of shame we should feel aside for a moment while I put my analyst hat on - we know this will only further radicalize those who see the US as a cruel and dehumanizing nation-state, right? Right?
