I don't think people appreciate how extraordinarily cold and snowy Greenland has been this summer, with positive mass balance days at what is normally the peak of the melt season. It's the one upshot of all this extreme heat in Europe:

The only upshot off this heat in Europe and Eastern North America is that heat isn't on the Greenland Ice Sheet. Greenland has thus far had a very mild summer, with mass balance staying well above norms from the last century. However two more months of melt season remain:

I do find myself actually worrying about glaciers I have known, actively hoping and checking for enough snow in winter and not too much melt in summer.

The onset of the melting season in Greenland is defined as the first of at least three days in a row with melting over more than 5% of the Greenland Ice Sheet. The median over the period 1981-2026 is on 27 May. This year, the melting onset was 9 days late, on 5 June, which is the fifth latest.

I dreamt last night that the peninsula had fallen off Antarctica into the Southern Ocean and I jumped off the continent into the freezing water to unsuccessfully try and save it. And this is this first post I see on bluesky in the morning. How odd.
