Taking time out to rest, my short blog explains why.. “During a medical crisis, the answer is not always to fight harder, think more positively, or keep going at all costs. Sometimes the task is to create enough safety to weather the storm; to coorie doon” www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/psyc...

A Reflection on Illness, Safety, and Adaptation

Chronic illness can cripple our sense of psychological safety, yet there are ways to cope when life's storms return.

Some hospital inpatients get referred for Psychology input, & I'm open to this. We see a tiny fraction of inpatients. But ALL patients have psychological needs. 'Seeing a psychologist' is the wrong approach (& expensive). Psychological care should just be an integral part of normal, holistic care.

Cambridge University should have known better, Fleet Street should have known better, the people hungrily absorbing every bit of news about it, making newsrooms feel like they had to keep going with it as a story, should have known better, horrible horrible horrible

Very helpful blog here on WAITING in healthcare. Why it's so hard, & practical steps to reduce the burden of it. Thanks to @drlizamorton.bsky.social "Compassionate communication, therefore, is not simply administration; it is the cornerstone of healthcare."

When Waiting Becomes Part of Illness

When healthcare answers are delayed, the psychological impact can be profound. Why prolonged waiting can feel threatening, and how compassionate communication can help patients.

Writing a book chapter is a long journey, and I’m excited that this project is finally nearing the finish line. This coming October, "Psychologists with Lived Experience of Disability: Navigating Clinical Practice" will be officially released by Routledge.

Fascists in Belfast set fire to buildings with people inside them. People of colour left work early to stay indoors. This is being actively encouraged by the world’s richest man whose openly pro-white nationalist platform X is still used by the UK government www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

Excellent piece. "Compliance is rewarded" applies to so much of hospital care. Children accept what happens to them because they assume that's just how it is, but that doesn't mean they're not harmed in the process. Very refreshing to see entrenched societal norms challenged like this.

Children in the hospital do not need to be heroes. They need to be allowed to be children who are scared, upset, resilient, and human. My latest blog for Psychology Today - Rethinking “Bravery” in Paediatric Healthcare: The Hidden Burden More: www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/psyc...

Rethinking “Bravery” in Paediatric Healthcare: The Hidden Burden

We call children “brave” when they are in the hospital, but do we silence their fear? It’s time to rethink hero narratives and support children’s emotional reality in care.

“Psychological awareness cannot stop at the hospital door. Until psychological well-being is treated as foundational rather than supplementary, healthcare systems will continue to exacerbate distress… at a cost we can no longer afford to ignore.” www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/psyc...

When Trauma Awareness Stops at the Hospital Door

Healthcare policy and practice poorly address psychological well-being for patients or practitioners. We must move beyond the medical gaze towards a psychologically informed approach.

"All we say to America is, 'Be true to what you said on paper.'" These words — spoken by MLK Jr. shortly before he was killed on this day in 1968 — ring just as true now. Let's honor his legacy by continuing the fight for social and economic justice.
