It was an HONOR to give the 1st lecture for the Doerr Center for Civic Engagement last week at HastingsCollege! It was titled “The Long Lost Cause: St. Augustine’s Confederate Monument and the Consequences of Historical Dishonesty,” & the response was tremendous!

I LOVE working with teachers & NCHE offers invaluable programs (like Advancing Civil Rights Education). Federal grants support 80% of their work, & the freeze has caused absolute uncertainty/panic regarding their future. SUPPORT OUR TEACHERS - call your congressperson!!!

America did a lot of terrible stuff to Dr. King, like jailing and abusing him and trying to get him to kill himself and killing him, but probably nothing so obscene as reinventing him in popular memory as some milquetoast whose primary concern was not hurting white people’s feelings.

I knew Iowa was going to be a bloodbath when I learned DeSantis had more campaign appearances than Haley and TFG combined. Turns out you have to be somewhat personable to do well in politics & the more you see of that uncharismatic dolt, the less likable he is.

It’s been an absolute shock to watch how the police and emergency services who were doing their job had been attacked tonight in Dublin. There is so much more we need to understand about the dangers of extremist far right ideology disrupting rule of law and democracy in Europe

I won't continually scream re: DJT's fascist threats. If we all do, it will become background noise. That would be devastating & deadly. BUT I'll analyze it, highlight it, give historical context, & more. Honestly, folks. We're in a struggle to preserve democracy. Please join me in pushing back.

Florida HB 395 will punish cities/local leader for removing Confederate monuments. The most insidious part? It retroactively applies to “monuments or memorials that have been removed, damaged, or destroyed on or after January 1, 2017.”

Florida bill aims to punish cities for removing Confederate monuments

A proposed bill in the Florida House of Representatives would punish cities for removing historical monuments and memorials, even if the removal happened five years ago.

If you’re in the Tampa, Clearwater, & St. Pete area, I will be speaking on “The Civil Rights Movement in Florida” next Friday, Nov 3, 7 pm at the Pinellas County African American History Museum. Hope to see you there, b/c teaching this history is an act of resistance in 2023!

Took my “Two Kings: MLK, Elvis, & America” class on a St. Augustine civil right walk today. Ended at the Flagler College marker, a reminder that students CAN change their community - even when it comes at a personal cost.

DeSantis on “Face The Nation” talking about antisemitism in Gaza and their rewriting of school books is some top-shelf hypocrisy given the fact he won't condemn Nazis in Florida and openly endorses the censoring of American History if it makes people 'uncomfortable'.
