When I started building my dwarven society, I snagged a mycologist to talk for a while about what kind of fungal crops might be possible, and in particular what food and textiles might be derived from them.
I’m gonna say virtually all authors need to get serious about textiles. Who is weaving them? Out of what? Who’s turning them into clothes and how much does it cost and do you have any idea how HARD all of that was before modern mills

Due to the excess of spiders currently living in our bookstore, all mail orders during the month of August will include two (2) complimentary spiders.
Our first visitor today said "My husband has some books here." Us: Great, what the name? Her: Joe Haldeman Us: Oh, not the books, we meant your husband's name. Gay Haldeman: It's Joe Haldeman. Such a lovely surprise visit! Related: we now have a few signed @joehaldeman.bsky.social titles.
To be best of my knowledge Edinburgh’s History & Games Lab is the 1st to use TTRPG Actual Play as a REF-able scholarly output. (I’ve done a bit of consulting, & hope to observe) A lot of my research lately has (unexpectedly) led to Old & New Chaosium’s role in the history & future of AP.
Here’s what I was getting up to in an Istanbul cistern last month with my Chaosium colleagues and a gaggle of miscellaneous actors and academics: a report from the “A Viking in the Sun” project, inc. copious links and photos. blogs.ed.ac.uk/hardrada/202...

I suspect most writers have that one authority figure who was snide about their writing, allowing that writer to be fueled by spite for years if not decades. My version was the creative writing prof who was dismissive about science fiction. I sent him a copy of Old Man's War when it was published.
Every time you buy one of my books, the maths teacher who told me, "Fiction is no way to make a living, you need real skills" feels a pang of agony deep in his balls. Surely it's worth buying my books for that alone? Plus, they're bloody good books.
I wasn’t planning to do a Mystic South post, but apparently I have more to say about it than I thought - starting with how much I enjoyed this year’s conference. Mystic South’s tagline is “theory – practice – play”: I did all three and had a great time doing them. www.patheos.com/blogs/johnbe...

I am once again begging Hollywood to stop using the Greek alphabet for an Ancient World movie, if they can't afford to even throw a couple of quid at anyone with an inkling of the language. Unless they really think audiences are dying to see THS THDPSSSSPS
When firefighters in Oakland, California, saw a pigeon struggling to breathe near the site of a fire they had fought, the crew stopped to help.
My grades are high because I let students revise and resubmit work. I've found that allowing students to grapple with revisions reinforces their learning, which I observe through verbal debriefs. Given a chance to revise, students speak more confidently about their work.
After getting hit with tariffs for the imported board games he sells, Jonathan Silva decided to see if he could produce a version of his Monopoly game in the United States. This is what he learned.
What a Monopoly importer learned when it tried to make things in the U.S.A.

Live your life in such a way that, when you die, people don’t have to rush to say, “Please be polite!”
If I accomplish one thing as a Bluesky account, let it be this: I want to show you the REAL joys of bookselling. The "got it for a dollar and sold it for a hundred" trope is tired, and frankly scurrilous. My two? anecdotes like that are not even on the Top 100 list of things I love about my work.
