As I'm the technician in my own group (alias I can't afford an actual technician), I'm spending my Sunday evening ordering consumables for the upcoming cruise 🫠, before I travel to Poland for the #MiningImpact3 meeting #JPI-Oceans.

A couple of weeks ago, I had lunch with a colleague from another faculty, with whom I studied. We were talking about the different papers each of us are working on and today, I received a review request for 1 of those papers. Sorry editor, strong conflict of interest (for more than 1 co-author) 🤷‍♀️.

Last Friday, I went out into the field to collect marine sediment and seawater samples to prepare the bacteria 🦠culture that I will enrich in 13C & 15N. Later-on this culture will be fed to sponges and bryozoans in 3 experiments I will conduct until the end of this year. #SPYCLING

Yesterday, my latest purchase arrived, oxygen optodes rated for 6000m water depth 💪. These optodes will be deployed in deep-sea incubation chambers that I am acquiring at the moment. Then, my lab incubation and my deep-sea incubation equipment is complete. #SPYCLING #ERCStG @erc.europa.eu

Today, Aylin Muslimli from #ConstructorUniversityBremen started her 2-months long internship in my "Benthic Ecological Biogeochemistry" group at @marumunibremen.bsky.social. In the next couple of days, she will test my brand-new incubation chambers and measure stirring speed and water mixing.

In October 2024, @itziarburgues.bsky.social contacted me and asked whether I would be willing to take over the supervision of her PhD thesis. I agreed and 1.5 years later, I spend this weekend reading her last thesis' draft and write my report so she can submit her thesis in 1 week. #ProudPhDAdivsor

How to check whether a scientist considers herself oveworked: Give her the author's proof of the latest paper and say there is a mismatch between authors in author list and corresponding author. I'm first and corresponding author and my name is spelled ✅. But I asked 2 persons to confirm it. 😬

I'm still reviewing the manuscript and I can only give one advice: If you intend to publish an extremely flawed study and the topic is my research speciality, I recommend to exclude me as a reviewer. Otherwise I will recommend that this extremely flawed study will be rejected.

I‘m late in reviewing a paper, so now I can enjoy the sunny 🌞 but rather fresh weather in Bremen and read on the @marumunibremen.bsky.social balcony.
