📋 Yesterday we finished our scientific program at our southernmost HAUSGARTEN station (~2390m depth) with last deployments of our multiple corer, box corer Rosi, OFOBS camera system & the last CTD ☺️. 🚢 Now, Polarstern is steaming south towards Tromsø. @meereisportal.bsky.social @awi.de @helmholtz.de
Out on the RV Tom Crean and had a bit of a landmark day. Technically not my first angler, but this extraordinary, beautiful animal made me genuinely emotional. It’s an absolute privilege to get to meet these animals that I’ve adored for so long! (She’s a triplewart seadevil, Cryptopsaras couesii)
Enypniastes eximia, a deep-sea sea cucumber recorded at 1095 m during #DeepWonders expedition. We see how this graceful gelatinous gem earned the nickname Spanish dancer. Look how their tubefeet glide across the seafloor, scooping up nutritious marine snow as the animal swoops up into the water.
....and we are off. See you in 3 weeks Iceland. Smooth seas are making it easy to set up during the long steam to our first station. #arctic #polarScience #KalaallitNunaat #RESPONSE #climatechange @au.dk @samsocean.bsky.social @univbrest.bsky.social @bas.ac.uk @pomp-eu.bsky.social 🧪🦞🌎

Deep-water crater lake #cichlids lost red cones and kept only green cones in the #retina. We expected these #photoreceptors to be either true green- or modified red cones, but it seems that they’re sth in between! Wanna see more? Pls come to Pau’s poster P3.54 at #icn2026vancouver @neuroethology.org
Interested in weird and crazy #photoreceptor types - like “superrods” in some deep-sea fish?🤩 Happy to see you on Wednesday poster (PS3.45) session at #ICN2026 #ICN2026Vancouver @neuroethology.org
At our central HAUSGARTEN station (2500m), we saw snailfish, eelpouts, stalk jelly, sponges, anemones & soft corals on dropstones; sea lilies, feather stars, starfish, sea cucumbers, scale worms, amphipod burrows, ctenophores and many #plastic items. @awi.de @meereisportal.bsky.social @helmholtz.de
My lab at @stonybrooku.bsky.social Dept of Ecology & Evolution is recruiting a 2-year Postdoc! They will split time between genomics and symbiosis dynamics of cnidarians 🪸, and the development of STAGdb. Start date as early as Sept 2026. Please share this post with anyone who might be a great fit!

🎥 2 days ago, we deployed our #deepsea camera at the east Greenland slope (2500 m). 🪨 We saw plenty of big dropstones, sponges & fish 🐟 e.g. Paraliparis cf. bathybius & eelpout Lycodes frigidus. #PS155 #Arctic (🎥 partly by Ole Lorenzen 🙏) @awi.de @sgn.one @helmholtz.de @meereisportal.bsky.social
For #MolluscMonday, a grim one. The new IUCN Red List assessed every mollusc known to live only at hydrothermal vents. Of 201 species, 125 are now threatened with extinction, and the driver is deep-sea mining that has not meaningfully started yet. #marinelife iucn.org/press-releas...

New paper: octopuses have a unique break in the core of their ribosome that makes protein-building more precise, and it may underpin their big brains. The kicker for me: it's present in shallow octopuses but absent in their deep-sea dumbo octopus cousins. #marinelife
Evolution of a core ribosomal innovation in octopus
Much of biology focuses on how genetic changes mediate new functions, but less attention is given to adaptations in other steps of the central dogma. Octopuses exhibit complex nervous systems and soph...
