Two things: first, a reminder that people have been capable of impressive realist art for centuries and we should recognise stylisation for what it is Second, do you think it’s easier to draw/sculpt accurate fish because they stay the same shape when dead more than mammals and birds do?

Out on the RV Tom Crean and had a bit of a landmark day. Technically not my first angler, but this extraordinary, beautiful animal made me genuinely emotional. It’s an absolute privilege to get to meet these animals that I’ve adored for so long! (She’s a triplewart seadevil, Cryptopsaras couesii)

A female anglerfish Cryptopsaras couesii photographed in a plastic tray. She is kind of diamond shaped with a huge head and an upturned mouth. Her lure is long and extends out from her brow, tipped with a small black bulb. Her eyes are so small as to be near invisible. Her skin is satin textured and jet black.Me holding the same fish in my hands. I’m wearing yellow oilskins, a self-inflating life jacket, and a red hard hat, alongside a pleased-as-punch expression.

Something cool I realised about this video is that the belly is so distended you can see bits of the fish’s internal anatomy. Those finger like bits are the pyloric caeca, part of the gut used to absorb peptides, and I think the triangular bit might be liver?

Black swallower fish — swell dining in the deep! During a recent ROV dive near Trinidad & Tobago, the #DeepWonders science team — led by @divaamon.bsky.social — collected spectacular footage of a black swallower fish (Chiasmodon sp.) at a depth of 1259 meters.

Jar of Moles (Grant Zoology Museum, London) crittery dozened things each pink snout snootling formaldehyde up it's bamboozler which poor fuck had to collect them out in the dirt with a shovel here moley moley BONK .
