How do we learn about our legal rights & obligations? What if we're in a new place, in a different language? These are some of the things I've been thinking about recently. Some initial thoughts in this post on @languageonthemove.bsky.social . Fascinating discussion in the comments! #Langsky #Lawsky

Legal literacy in a linguistically diverse society

Had a fantastic day at the AI Fairness event in Bologna! Inspiring speakers from academia and industry, fascinating conversations during the breaks, and a new book for the train ride home. I also received some great feedback on my poster and have a few exciting leads to follow-up!

A woman wearing glasses, a bright red sweater, and a white collared shirt is smiling in front of a research poster. The poster is titled, *"Insights about ‘representative data’ from a study on disability human rights in refugee contexts: Can data truly be representative without compromising autonomy?"* The poster includes sections on representative data, disability data in refugee contexts, and a framework for analysis, with text, diagrams, and visuals. The setting appears to be a conference or academic event, with the poster pinned to a light-colored wall.

People from elsewhere in Australia, and indeed many Melburnians, seem to think we have a world class transport system. Enduring accessibility issues across the network mean it remains unfit for a serious 21st century city www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11...

The 'voluntary' diversity questions in HR systems feel contradictory. The 'required' asterisk (*) feels wrong, especially when the page claims participation is 'voluntary.' At least this organisation includes an 'I prefer not to say' option—something many forget. It still feels uncomfortable.

The image displays a series of diversity-related survey questions with asterisks indicating required fields. The questions are as follows:

"Which of the following best describes your gender identity? *"
"Gender assigned at birth *"
"Is your gender identity the same as the sex you were assigned at birth? *"
"What is your sexual orientation? *"
"What is your ethnicity? *"
"Which of the following terms best describes your religious beliefs? *"
"Do you consider yourself to have a disability? *"
"Please select your age category from the below *"
Each question is listed individually with clear spacing between them.

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, marking the start of the 16 days of Activism. In 2023 every 10 minutes globally a woman is killed by a partner or family member. In 2022 the rate was one woman killed every 11 minutes. 1 minute matters. A thread 🧵👇🏼
