A serious one... because it's Monday. Recent reporting has found foreign accounts pushing Alberta separatism in Canada. People pretending to be local, stealing content, scamming Canadians, and warping political dialogue. That should bother everyone. It for sure bothers us. 👇
Pride is about celebrating the freedom to be yourself. In Canada, our diversity makes us stronger, and everyone deserves to live authentically, safely, and with dignity. Let’s continue building communities where acceptance, respect, and inclusion are valued 🏳️🌈🍁 #PrideMonth #LoveIsLove
Building better social media also means making it more accessible. We’re working with people in our community who use assistive technologies to help improve the Gander experience and make it more usable for all. Interested in participating? gandersocial.ca/blog... #NationalAccessibilityWeek
The community has spoken, so we're building. Here’s a peek at what's just been released, what we're working on, and what we're noodling on at Gander. A bit of healthier social, a bit of fun, some growth, and a dash of self-sufficiency. Anything here you’ve been hoping to see? Something else?
We believe it's possible for Canada to build an online safety framework that protects people while protecting privacy, free expression, accessibility, and democratic participation. Do we need to choose one over the other? Our full submission: gandersocial.ca/blog... 10/10
Our recommendations on online safety legislation in Canada - Gander
The other day, someone commented on one of our Facebook posts: “What’s taking so long? We already have this technology. You’re not reinventing the wheel.” Granted, they weren't in our Early Access Program, so they hadn't seen the infrastructure, app, or moderation policies, and neither had they connected with the lovely community that's grown there

Canada’s Bill C-22 is a repackaged version of last year’s surveillance nightmare and @signal.org says it would rather leave Canada than comply. Good intentions don’t prevent abuse, capabilities do. The only guarantee is technical impossibility. This commitment to privacy is why I trust Signal.
Canada’s C-22 bill is a surveillance overreach that paves the way to backdoor encrypted communications of users around the world. www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...
This is a big win for privacy, ensuring that neither company has access to the contents of your messages. www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...
Victory! End-to-End Encrypted RCS Comes to Apple and Android Chats
With the support of end-to-end encryption for RCS messages, Apple and Google have taken the steps to Encrypt it Already!

Everyone deserves the sort of privacy that end-to-end encryption offers for their conversations, and we’re happy to see Google and Apple recognized that with this release. www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...

Rich Communications Services (RCS) end-to-end encryption is finally available between Apple and Google devices. RCS is the successor to SMS. This does not include metadata, i.e. context on the conversation, but at least the actual message content is encrypted. I strongly recommend @signal.org.
I am also surprised that there’s not more public backlash from Canadian organizations that are champions of online privacy and security. @cira.ca @gandersocial.ca @rparmarbc.bsky.social
@signal.org please speak out against the extremely problematic Bill C-22, the Lawful Access Act, that is being considered by the Canadian government. They are downplaying the risk under the guise of only requesting encrypted information for just reasons. 🙄 The only security guarantee is no door. 🔒

Passkeys can feel confusing at first, but once it clicks, you realise they’re one of the most meaningful improvements to authentication in years. No passwords. No phishing. Just you proving it’s you. If you want to understand them (or implement them), Passkey Central is a solid place to start.

Spent the whole week figuring out how to do task management in Obsidian only to rediscover how similar my natural process is to @todoist.com. 😅 I really tried after Apple Reminders fell short, but sometimes you just need to admit defeat and move on. Still love Markdown for everything else though!

Anyone else spent the time refreshing their inbox waiting for a code via email considering whether they could replace the service with something else? 😒 Something that avoids the horrible user experience of SMS or email based sign in codes. Honestly. Do better by your users.
I really enjoyed this post. A lot of points that hit home for me. It will definitely occupy my thoughts for a while.
