It's starting to turn around, though. I'm not talking about food safety, although that's definitely an issue. So many convenience foods I used to like have gotten worse in the last few years, often replacing the old flavors with "hot" covering more HCFS slurry. Enshittification encroaching.

"Revamped origin story, then wait for sales figures before greenlighting anything else," is probably the laziest way to deal with licensing a nostalgia IP. The main, if not only, audience doesn't need an origin story and your Modern Take may just alienate them anyway. Just start telling stories.
I really miss when comics intended from the start as limited series would SAY SO on the cover. "Is the next issue just delayed, or was there never going to be a next issue?" is a problem I have all too often with my handful of remaining floppies.
