Projet Equipex+ (ANR-21-ESRE-0053) 🎯Objectif : NumĂ©riser en 3D les collections naturalistes françaises đŸ€Partenaires : #CNRS, CINES, CNAM, EPHE, UCBL, UBE, @sorbonne-universite.fr, @ird-fr.bsky.social, @umontpellier.bsky.social, @mnhn.fr www.ecolplus.fr

Very happy that this is finally accessible 😊 Beyond the amazing 3D models that can be downloaded in several formats, @leaveylab.bsky.social added lesson plans for using them in anatomy teaching. We also detail the protocol for AI-based segmentation that I developed during my previous postdoc.

10 years ago, the London NHM cleverly manufactured a controversy when they announced they'd be replacing Dippy the Diplodocus in their main hall with a blue whale skeleton. Long story short, the whale rules, in spite of its notable handicap of not being a dinosaur. đŸ§”

Wow, nature is too cool! Structures on stinkbug hind legs that used to be interpreted as ears are actually chambers with fungi. The bugs coat their eggs in those fungi to protect them against parasitoid wasps. đŸ§Ș Defensive fungal symbiosis on insect hindlegs | Science www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Defensive fungal symbiosis on insect hindlegs

Dinidorid stinkbugs were reported to possess a conspicuous tympanal organ on female hindlegs. In this study, we show that this organ is specialized to retain microbial symbionts rather than to perceiv...

A few behind-the-scenes photos of Minimalist Coryphodon. After a couple colleagues expressed disappointment that our “giant” of the Paleocene wasn’t all that giant, I pushed for a more agro pose. I wanted visitors to leave understanding that an animal this size could easily crush them!

I’m (finally) reading about Dynastinae morphological character and I stumbled upon Guillaume-Antoine Olivier, who described many species such as Megasoma gyas... in 1789 and in the following years. I like to imagine the guy "Yeah France is on fire rn but I’m going to describe my insects tyvm"

Original drawing from Guillaume-Antoine Olivier of a Megasoma gyas, a huge dark beetle with golden hair and huge horns on torso and head.

I used my 3D printer to create educational anatomical models of the brains of fish, frog, & lizard 🐟🐾🩎 The (color-blind friendly) colors demonstrate anatomical regions, and the 🧠 are many times larger than their real size. They can be removed from their stands for closer examination/comparison đŸ§Ș
