Packing you suitcase for LAcon V and don’t know what to wear? We’ve got you - rep your favourite upcoming Glasgow Eastercon with our Unconfined merch - we have everything from tshirts to polo shirts to hoodies, in a variety of designs and sizes so there’s something for everyone! buff.ly/1NC3xVo

A photo of David and Alan sat at the Unconfined fantable at Metropolcon. David is a white man with short brown hair wearing a dark grey Unconfined tshirt with the logo across it in white. Alan is a white man with short white hair and beard, and is wearing a dark blue polo shirt with a small Unconfined logo on the top right chest. The logo shows a silhouetted skyline of Glasgow arced across the top with a mirrored skyline below of a science fiction city below. In the centre is the word ‘Unconfined’ in capital letters. The table has Unconfined flyers on it, a banner of Scottish flags across the front, and a standing banner behind the desk.

We’re delighted to introduce another of our fantastic Guests of Honour for Unconfined: Tamsyn Muir! Originally from New Zealand, Tamsyn Muir is a science fiction, fantasy and horror author living in Oxford 🇳🇿 (1/3)

A headshot of Tamsyn Muir, showing her from the shoulders up. She is a white woman with brown eyes and long dark red hair past her shoulders, and the front of her hair is pulled back in a half-up half-down style. She is wearing a cream blazer with a plain black top. She is stood outside with a mossy stone wall filling most of the background.

Can’t believe it’s just over six months until Unconfined, you might want to use our Weegie Word of the month: aye right! Sceptical two positives can make a negative? 'Aye right' is the way to express your feelings! Each word means 'yes', but together, they're a sarcastic expression of disbelief.

There is a mirrored skyline below in purple of a fantasy city skyline, with five small apple trees in green and red in front of the bottom half of the buildings. In the centre, between the two horizon lines are the word ‘Aye Right’ in purple letters.

We’re looking for volunteers! Eastercon is entirely volunteer-run, and we need people like you to make it happen ❤️ Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, to learn how the convention works, and to give something back for all the great times you’ve had at cons gone by.

I’ve been attending conventions since 1980. For many years I just enjoyed them as provided to me, but I felt the I’d like to contribute too. I gophered at a few cons, was the gopher parent at another, and then started helping with green room, mostly at Satellites.

A photo of Lesley sat in a restaurant, holding a whisky glass and smiling at the camera. She is a white woman with brown and grey hair, wearing purple rimmed glasses and a read, gold and black stripped top.

Have you found yourself staring into the abyss of your wardrobe in a dissatisfied fashion lately? Is your souvenir T-shirt collection no longer sparking joy? Well fear not, because Unconfined is here to help!

We’re going to hop into the time machine to see an Eastercon past! We’re visiting the 42nd Eastercon and 5th Scottish Eastercon: Speculation, held at the Hospitality Inn on Cambridge St in Glasgow in 1991, with writer Rob Holdstock as Guest of Honour.

A text banner for Speculation. In all capital serif font in the centre is the word ‘Speculation’ with a rounded black box outlining it. On the top left, breaking the border are the words ‘42nd Annual National Science Fiction Convention 1991’

In honour of National Refugee Week this month, this month’s Weegie Word is Refuweegee! A Refuweegee is someone who has travelled to Scotland, whether an immigrant, refugee, or asylum seeker, and have found a home in Glasgow.

Our next online bookclub takes place in 3 weeks! This month we'll be discussing the modern horror novel Thirteen Storeys, the debut novel of Jonathan Sims, writer and voice actor of the horror podcast The Magnus Archives. 📚 Thirteen Storeys by Jonathan Sims 🗓️ 8pm, Tuesday 14th July 📍YouTube

So why volunteer? As an older bloke, I’ve found myself back in the city where I was born, with a bit more time on my hands than I used to have. I’ve been an SF fan for decades, and when I bumped into someone I’ve known for years who’d started volunteering for Eastercon, it made me curious.

A photo of a man sat on the Iron Throne in a convention hall. He is a white middle-aged man wearing glasses and a lanyard. He is wearing an orange jacket over a grey tshirt, light jeans, and blue trainers. The throne is made of fake swords and in the background are picnic tables, sofas, and marquees.

There will be lots of great things to do at the convention, but there’s lots of fun Science Fiction things happening around Glasgow too! The Glasgow Tramway is an international arts venue, and, sequestered behind it, The Hidden Gardens is a public urban greenspace designed to encourage creativity!

A photo of the exhibition. Most of the photo is lit by purple UV lights with some white spotlights. There is a large fabric mask, a few feet tall, suspended from the ceiling lit by a spotlight, with mesh tentacle-like covered walkways suspended stemming from it, glowing in the UV light. In the foreground is a glass dome on a table.A large insect-like sculpture with the cover of the mesh walkway hanging over it's back. It's stomach is red and green and the bodya nd legs blye with black feet and spikes coming from the front and back. It is lit internally.

This month’s Weegie Word is actually two words: Taps Aff! The best sign of summer in Glasgow (which is generally accepted as 2 weeks in May) is the removal (aff) of garments from the upper (tap) half of the body. The exact temperature is yet to be standardised and is up to the individual Glaswegian

We’re coming to Satellite 9 next week, 22nd-24th May! We’ll be having a fantable there so be sure to pop over, grab a ribbon, have a chat, a get your membership (if you haven’t already!) If you can’t wait until next week, memberships are always available through our website here - buff.ly/yHsVIIN

The Satellite 9 logo. A viking-style long ship with shields across the side and large red and white striped wing-like sails on either side. The front of the ship has a simple dragon face and a satellite dish on the tail. The ship is flying in front of a light blue ringed planet.

You can vote on the Hugo Awards, even if you don't plan to go to the Worldcon. A $50 WSFS membership gets you voting rights on the Hugo Award. It also usually comes with ebook copies of finalists. We'd certainly love to see more people voting (and would also love your vote for fanzine this year.)

Hi, I’m Ila (right), the Promotions head for Unconfined, and this is how I got here. I’m not sure how old I was and I’m not sure what convention I was at (maybe 14, maybe Satellite), but I do remember being in the Crowne Plaza hotel handing out stacks of warm, freshly printed newsletters.

A photo of 4 friends stood together wearing Glasgow 2024 Staff badges. On the left is a tall white man with long brown hair in a ponytail. He is wearing a black leather jacket with a Hellfire shirt. Next to him is a tall white woman wearing glasses, with bleach-blonde hair in a ponytail. She is weaeing a dark blue cardigan and a brown and purple tshirt. Next to her is a white woman with curly ginger shoulder-length hair. She is wearing round glasses and a yellow tshirt with the phrase ‘sounds gay I’m in' on the right chest. Next to her is a mixed race person with dark shoulder-length hair and clear-rimmed glasses. They are wearing a black and white hawaiian shirt. All four are holding their staff badges up to the camera and smiling.

If you’re at NornCon this weekend, so are we! Our co-chairs David Bamford and Alan Fleming will have a full fan table to promote Unconfined! They’ll be taking membership and volunteer sign ups and you can get lovely, shiny ribbon to show your support for Eastercon2027!
