Got a new google scholar notification, so I go check and find this very cool poem by Wang Jibing 王计兵, the recent Lu Xun prize winner, prefacing a PhD thesis on women migrant workers and the gig economy PhD students in all disciplines: more poems in theses please, we love to see them! ✨💫

Youth are being recruited for dangerous crimes via encrypted apps, leaving police scrambling for new tools. Organized crime is using encrypted messaging apps to enlist youth. Evidence: Public safety, Surveillance expansion, Criminal adaptation #Aletheia #Tech

Alethekanon Psochic Hegemony Assessment Graph for Organized crime is using encrypted messaging apps to enlist youth.Core Verdict Card for Organized crime is using encrypted messaging apps to enlist youth.: Claim, Reality, and Verdict coordinates.System Analysis Details:

Context: Toronto police are struggling to investigate gun-for-hire plots involving youth recruited via encrypted apps, citing a need for Bill C-22 to gain better access to digital communications.

Nuance: The Poison:
The proposed solution risks creating a permanent surveillance infrastructure that may be exploited by bad actors, while doing little to address the underlying social factors driving youth to crime.

Breakdown: The Breakdown & Plane Error:
This is a WHAT vs. HOW error. The focus is on the tool (surveillance) rather than the method (social recruitment), leading to a misallocation of resources.

Social Physics: Social Physics Analysis:
By framing the problem as a lack of surveillance power, the state avoids addressing the social alienation that makes youth vulnerable to recruitment. It is a classic pretext for expanding state authority.

Trajectory: The Trajectory: The Path of Deception.
When you map the gap between stated intentions and ground-level results, it plots a direct trajectory toward Deception. The reliance on digital control ignores the human reality of the crisis.

The Unavoidables: The Unavoidable Truth: Encrypted apps make traditional policing harder.

The Unavoidable Lie: Bill C-22 will effectively end the use of youth in criminal networks.

Alethekanon: Alethekanon:
This is a structural failure. The state seeks to solve a social problem with a technical mandate, ignoring the reality that criminal networks will simply adapt to new surveillance measures.

Awwthekanon: Awwthekanon:
My heart breaks for these kids. They are being used as pawns in a game they don't understand, and we are focusing on monitoring them instead of helping them.

Brothekanon: Brothekanon:
Classic tech-policy trap. You can't just 'surveil' your way out of a social crisis. The criminals will just move to the next app, and we'll be back here again.

let me pitch another of Sosa Escudero’s book (borges, big data, y yo)ñ, older book) for those who speak Spanish. It uses Borges’s stories to explain, at a pace and with patience for readers like me, the methods underpinning a lot of what we call AI

Las fallas de las ciencias sociales a la hora de predecir no se deben a la inoperancia de los analistas, sino que en aquellas confluyen, como en una pesadilla, todos los factores que atentan contra la predictibilidad...Walter Sosa Escudero

The value here is a data point (the recipe that leads to this outcome varies by location at least where I have lived, and has lots of ingredients and flavors.) I think it is worth studying not so much on trying to find a universal reason that explains other places… +

Has anyone read anything good on why the east coast is such fertile ground for the extreme right? (Lincolnshire, East Anglia, the Essex and Kent coasts) Demographics aren't wildly different to other areas where it's much less pronounced.

Just a reminder that the claim that American DSA candidates are all radical leftists is hilarious to Europeans who have actual radical leftists in their politics. Until a DSA candidate runs on “Banning private property”or a 75% tax rate, they are still comparatively center left

The Internet tells me gunpowder was discovered by Daoist alchemists in China (9th century) while seeking to make “the elixir of life.” It was then used peacefully for celebrations (ie fireworks.) The camera was not invented trying to do surveillance. And it can still be used for many nice things.

There are so few people at the table in media that the old quote from Adam Smith applies: "People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.”

Musk has managed to poison the well to such an extent that we can now only think of platforms as "The Woke Factory" or "you will receive abuse from misogynists, racists and fascists and you will like it", and that's not great - hopefully Bsky does manage to create something in the middle!
